Blockbuster to Battle Netflix with New Set-Top Box

Netflix already has an installed base of over 20 million users just with the Xbox 360. Then there are the Tivo owners, and the Samsung Blu-Ray player owners and i'm sure a host of others. How is Blockbuster gonna compete with that without any type of exclusivity deals? Blockbuster is sinking and this is a desperate move I think.

Hey spoonard... yeah this news was released right before Thanksgiving, and I was going to post a "News" story for the site (but just hadn't got around to it yet). And you shouldn't knock Blockbuster here... have you forgot they acquired MovieLink in the past year, which -DOES- give them rights to about 3000 movie titles right off the bat, with more to come (so as to challenge Netflix who has around 10,000 available).

Then there is others who are competing in this market, Apple, etc. So, it will be a real battle in the future between discs vs streaming/download... and which provides the best infrastructure (technology), price, convenience, reliability, etc.

I'm a 1080p Blu-ray Hi-Def supporter!
And I support owning and renting of discs.

They expect to allow some Blu-ray players to access their service next year.

According to CEO Jim Keyes, Blockbuster will allow movie rentals to be downloaded to some Blu-Ray players next year, widening the number of film fans who can enjoy its catalogue, and putting it squarely head to head with Netflix, which already streams films to selected players.

Possibly even the PS3

This may be a noob question but is there a service like this available for the PS3?

I'd like to try and HD movie download service just to see how it goes.

If it's downloading we're talking about, then I wonder how long you get to keep the movie before it's deleted off your DVR/Tivo? Streaming is a little different because you would need to watch it right then and there. I ask because a friend of mine records PPV movies onto his Tivo to watch later. He just recently found out that you can only keep the ordered PPV movie for 24-hours, then it deletes itself from the Tivo. Alas, though, there is a sneak around that I'm sure Direct TV is aware of. On the Tivo when a film is deleted it saves it in a deleted bin, much like the recycle bin on Winders. From there you can retrieve any deleted movie and it worked on the PPV's he had deleted. I'm sure the "on-demad" people will have this issue fixed before too long.

Tim thats a pretty easy but sneaky way to extend the watching time, lol. I know of some people that output it to a recorder from the DVR, lol. No, I'm not talking about myself as I don't have TIVO or DVR.
