I hope all of you had a great Thanksgiving out there. I read in my Sunday paper that Black Friday weekend was a huge success. On an average, every place on the map was up 4% over last year. So I guess our eonomy is not that bad in the shitter after or all. But maybe, just maybe, most people pulled out that little 3x2 piece of plastic and charged their little heart's out? Whatever the reason, it finally is good to hear some positive news about the eonomy, but then there are the fools who beat each other up and stomped a person to death on Black Friday just so they could get their hands on a Plasa TV..... what a shame.

Part 2: Is there any computer techno geeks out there? I am looking at a lap top for the family, to replace my 6 year old Gateway hunk of junk. I was looking at the SONY VGN-NS190J/L for 899.99 at Best Buy. The reviews that I read were pretty good. Yes this Laptop has a bulit in Blu Ray drive. I mean it does not have to be a SONY, and my price range is between 500 and 900, I am just looking at the best bang for my buck. I did look at a few Acer's, and a couple of Toshiba's but as usual I need help. So if you can spare a few lines for me let me have it.

Thanks in advance guys.

Invisible Biker,
On your second point. IMO I would recommend getting a good extended warranty for any laptop you buy if you're looking to use it longer than 2 years. Due to my job, I purchase close to 4000 laptops a year of all makes and models and with EVERY brand we notice a 75% failure rate between years 2 and 3. Then again if you're just planning on using it on the couch or at a desk you may be all right. For the sales reps that I support, they tend to put the laptops through the paces on a daily basis. Once again just my two cents but wanted to add some value to this forum where I have some knowledge on the topic.

Another good place to look for a cheap laptop is www.dell.com/outlet or www.dealnews.com

Hope this helps,
Swanson

I have a feeling that's what happened and we're going to get a truckload of people bitching in January about their credit card bills.

I'm looking forward to a second straight year of putting no Christmas gifts on any credit card. Makes me feel much, much better come 2009.

ALWAYS and I mean ALWAYS get an extended warranty with laptops. Their parts are the very definition of intergration that it cries for an extended warranty. I have a Gateway and I bought it last year from Best Buy and it's been to Geek Squad 3 times and it's not even 2 years old. Desktops I don't get extended warranties because I do alot of upgrading and servicing my self but laptops are a pain to service because everything is intergrated.

NEVER BUY SONY LAPTOPS, I had a Vaio before the Gateway and I wanted to upgrade the memory and come to find out that the memory was proprietory, well needless to say that a week afterwards the motherboard died on me and I had that laptop for 1 year. The best laptops come from Toshiba, HP, and Dell. I also have a Toshiba Satellite Notebook and it is beyond what I expected. This one is 1 1/2 years old and no problems what so ever. However, it caught a virus and I didn't have the recovery disk from Toshiba but I did have an OEM copy of Windows XP with COA sticker and it worked out fine. The only thing is the drivers from the Toshiba site are very confusing.

My work Dell laptop didn't even last 2 years, and so far thank god work pays for it. I have had the battery replaced twice, and now the HDD last month. The internal wireless card has now stopped working.

Buy a warranty for what it is worth. I think laptops are the only thing I would consider an extended warranty for. Read the fine print first.

JJ I am also paying cash this year for everything(thanks to my Christmas Club and the fact that as you get older, you become more debt free LOL) Anyways, thanks again guys for your help, I did not know about laptops and them malfunctioning that easy. It will take place of my desk top (which is a Gateway and I have had nothing but problems with that computer so I will not be looking at any Gateway laptops). I guess I will continue to shop around until the right one comes along.

my family has bought three hp laptops and three toshiba laptops. all three hp laptops broke down on us, but the toshibas have been workhorses. the only things that needed to be replaced are the batteries, but all batteries die eventually.

I had an HP and a Gateway laptop, thankfully both worked without any major issues for me.

More than likely I will zone in on a Toshiba. But what about Acer, anybody have any info on these computers?

I only go with HP. Never had a problem with their computers. I have a laptop that's probably five years old and still works perfectly (and on the same battery).

It's a zd7260US Pavilion.
