Component or TOSLINK for audio? Does PS3 allow for analog audio connections?

they each have theoretical advantages, but they end up sounding the same.

I've also been looking around online and since I'll be using my old receiver for a while, I know I can't take advantage of the HD audio codecs. I keep seeing, however, that a TOSLINK connection between the PS3 and my receiver will only give me 2.0PCM. Is this correct?

I believe bladerunner said I'd get the DTS core tracks out of the Blu-ray discs.

Bottom line is this, and I apologize if all my questions sound dumb or redundant, but you know, I trust you guys...will I be able to get surround sound out of my PS3 and Blu-ray discs with my older receiver? For codecs like Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA, DTS-HD, and such, a "DTS core track" will play?

I've seen some discs with audio labeled as PCM Uncompressed. How will this play through my receiver with the connection I'm using?

Italy I use a PS3 for playback hooked up to a receiver without Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD, you will have no problems. Thankfully by default most blurays will play the Dolby Digital so you're good. For those blurays that have the DTS HD audio tracks you will get the DTS core track which is what you get on regular DVD's. I have never had a single audio issue with any of my blurays so far and I never once had to choose Dolby Digital or DTS HD, etc on the disk, it just plays. I use the Fibre Optic cable for audio like you will be doing.

Ok, this makes me feel better. Thanks Falcon!

My next assumption would then be that a disc with a label such as "Uncompressed PCM" or something, like on the first version of the Casino Royale Blu-ray as well as other films I've noticed, would play as what? Would these still give me a core DD or DTS track? Or are these the ones that go to 2.0LPCM or however its labeled? This might have been the thing that worried me as I was thinking all would go to 2.0.

Someone said earlier in another post of mine, that they use ProLogic II for Blu-rays.

Man..so much info...I feel bad for asking all these questions...I really do.

I hope you can understand why though!!

Ok, I feel better. haha

My problem is I worry that I'm wasting my money on something I will need to replace later. I do want to play video games, but am happy with PS2. But I want Blu-ray and a PS3...and also good audio. So, thanks to everyone who has replied and helped. I truly appreciate all your patience.

hey dave, this little excerpt came from the 2009 "home theater" buyers guide. (full product review is located in the august 2008 issue.)

BEST BUDGET PRODUCT.
PIONEER VSX-918V A/V RECIEVER.

"this $349 budget reciever outperformed expectations with pioneers PHAT amplifier technology, which cites hand selected parts, tempature compensation, and external electromagnetic interference. it drove 5 speakers full range well enough to make drums sound like drums. although it has NO onboard decoding for dolby true hd or dts-hd, it DOES have a multichannel HDMI input which accepts signals from a players decoder." (the ps3 will do the decoding, and my expierience with pioneer products has been very positive. def. worth checking out!)

btw. what games are you interested in? what kind of monitor do you have, size?

I have 2007's 65" Toshiba DLP. I play Madden and MLB The Show on PS2, and will look forward to playing next year's versions on PS3. I'm also a hige Gran Turismo fan, and have been playing that since GT on the PSOne. I've all since then, except for the newest, GT5: Prologue. I'm looking forward to picking that up first. I also just finished SW: Unleashed on PS2, and would be hesitant to buy it for PS3...although it looks amazing!

I watch more hours of movies and TV than I do play video games though, since time is a factor! I work as a counselor in a high school and I have to be up early. I usually watch 3-5 movies a week, so going Blu will be great!!

With the PS3 though, and it's capabilities as a video game console, I may dive into other genres of video games. Growing up, I played lots of RPGs (when days seemed to never end!!) and FPS, but you know...don't have the time now!

Hey Blade, just posted mine above and saw your edit.

Yea, I love Pioneers man! I'm on my 2nd. My current one only decodes DD 5.1 and dts. It has inputs for 7.1 channels, but I only have a 5.1 set-up. dts NEO:6 and 96/24 is there as well.

The one I had in mind for myself (when you told me to calm down and go with PS3 only for now haha) is fairly expensive at $800-something. It is a Pioneer VSX-01TXH. It decodes the newer HD codecs, and has, I believe 4 HDMI inputs. I saw it on a website, www.authorizedelectronics.com for $509 or something.

I've called them and actually spoke to someone a few times. I had some questions about other junk on their site, but was surprised to see that someone was there giving well-informed answers rather than keeping you on hold or hanging up on you. That was the first good sign. I read a positive review of their site on a forum, can't remember where, perhaps AVS. If I can find more positives, I may use some Xmas money to purchase this receiver from them. It's only $150 more than the one you suggested and it can play DTS-HD and DolbyTrue HD.

On the other hand, I may be satisfied with my current set-up and save myself the money!

What to do, what to do
