Scotsman, but there are still lots of consumers out there that don't have HDTVs. If they are in the market for a DVD player because theirs broke down or they didn't have one to begin with, the upscalers are pretty enticing.

However, if you've spent the cash on an HDTV, and Blu-ray players are as low as $150 now and still dropping, why wouldn't you spend the few extra dollars for better video, audio, and bonus material?

Personally, I don't think this is a spin from Sony as they are fearing upscalers will replace Blu-ray. I think it's a spin from the studio because they know that there are still plenty of consumers with non-HD capable TVs that haven't made the jump in tough times. If Sony is also getting into the upscale market, then of course they are going to be saying good things about it. That doesn't mean it's better, though. Or even comparable.

Oh, I'm here. I'm just listening. I think this is another good place to post that "Office Space" pic of them beating a photshopped dead horse.

blu-ray is soo good and addictive, that a previous "reference" quality dvd such as "finding nemo" now looks soft by comparison. upconversion? maybe on a small monitor? say 32". (oh, and seating distance is also a factor too..ahem.)

i haven't watched a sddvd in months on the bigscreen, and THAT literally kills me because i own a ton of them. however, it kills me more when i see my daughter watching "finding nemo" on the bigscreen and i'm like..."wouldn't you rather watch this instead!" (now holding up a copy of "wanted" on the glorious br.) "it SURE looks and sounds better!"

her response?

none at all! just a look that says. "does it look as if i care about your obvious disease?)

I still watch SD DVD's all the time because upscaling works and it works extremely well on my Toshiba HD A35. Probably still the best upscaler out there. Sure, it doesn't look as good as a real HD DVD or Blu-Ray movie, but it's an obvious difference over a non-upscaled DVD (Also it's better than the upscaling of my PS3!)

yeah spoonard, it works on my a2 as well. and to be honest it looks pretty good. the finding nemo thing was a mild joke, it looks good upscaled. but it looks nowhere close to wall-e, ratatouille, or cars on the big bad blu.

off topic:
i heard a rumor that pioneer was working on a 400 gig. disc! does anybody know anything about this, and what it might be used for
