With the economic crisis undoubtedly effecting retail and with a industry study finding

Quote:
Indeed, 57 percent of standard DVD customers say they are “waiting to make sure Blu-ray is really the standard the industry will stick with,”

I seems a strange time for Ron Sanders, president of Warner Home Video to come out with the following quote

Quote:
We think this is a do-or-die time for Blu-ray. We must get it established as a favorite holiday item.

What on earth would make him say such a thing publicly?

Do you think they are positioning themselves to request lower licensing or perhaps financial incentives from Sony and the BDA?

Point 1: I do think the studios really want BD to catch on, but no one is really willing to wait as long they gave DVD to become majorly profitable.

Point 2: "Top-selling items included flat screen high-definition televisions, GPS systems, digital frames and cameras, video game systems and Blu-ray players." From Home Media Magazine

Point 3: So Sanders is being honest, based on what he sees from Warner. Would you rather him lie or send out some dummy propaganda? Chances are he'd be roasted for it. No win scenario.

Regardless of what was in the best seller list. The amount of players 'in the wild' won't increase significantly with a 'days' worth of sales.

Surely the BDA would have preferred it if he had said nothing at all.

Won't argue that. But getting the BD player is a necessary first step to selling BD content.

Absolutely. However, no organization can control what its members say completely. Maybe a list of talking points, but we do live in a country with free speech.

Yes, but Scotsman is from Scotland where his freedom of speech is limited to words like "Haggis" or phrases like "Let's get pissed!"

I fully agree.

That is why I find it strange that Warner came out with that statement. They didn't have to. They could have said nothing or they could have said something bland and neutral. They didn't. What they did say has a fairly specific time frame with a fairly black and white statement.

I can't help thinking they're positioning themselves for some sort of sweetener from the BDA

Hi Tim. We don't say that over here. That was just a bit of movie fantasy.

We don't say it because we take it for granted that's what we'll do.

Scotsman asked, "Is Warner after more cash?"

There is only one response to that question:

So posters5 you're not surprised that Warner would appear to have put this holiday period as their time frame for staying with or dropping Blu-ray.

Another January shock announcement from Warner maybe?

You're reading too much into it, I think. Nowhere does Warner say they're out after Christmas.

Besides, when BD takes off, does Warner want to have to play catch up like Paramount and Universal? Nope.
