It has to be a setting on your receiver then. Are you using the SAME optical cable when putting it in the back?

Yes, I have one end in the PS3, and the other I tried in the front, and then moved it to the rear, inplace of my PS2's TOSLINK. That's where it is now. I would not mind it coming out of the front. It's the last free optical input I have.

has the front optical jack been exposed to dust? is their a plug or a "door" covering the jack when not in use? getting back to the coax. digital thing. since i'm sensing that your dvr only has toslink, you may be able to purchase a cable that is toslink at one end and coax at the other. i actually prefer a coaxial digital connection as do many experts.

falcon,
your bathroom comment had me rolling...so very true!

edit.
regarding bd pq output settings.
set the rgb output to "full" (for some reason this improves the picture on my set even though i'm using hdmi???)
turn off "super white"
set the 24 hz thing to auto...your set will not do 24hz.
infact set EVERYTHING to auto that can be set to auto.

Figured it out...3 days later! HA!!

I was laying down on the floor checkin out the front panel of my receiver, and I plugged in my PS2's optical cable in the front to see if I got any sound out of that. Needless to say, I did not. After playing with some of the buttons on the front of the receiver, I realized the problem...I had been on the Analog mode when had my iPod connected for stereo sound. It would not pick up the optical cable's audio. Alas, when I pressed the button, the sound poured out all over the place!

(not that anyone cared)

Thanks for everyone's help in the meantime!
