Curious, but flipping through my HD channels last weekend I noticed ABC Family was doing a Harry Potter marathon. And yes, I was on the ABC Family "HD" channel, not the regular digital broadcast. What surprised me is they were showing the SD versions of the Potter movies with the nasty PQ and black side bars. WTF!? Why the hell would they be showing the SD versions on their HD network? We all know the Potter films are on Brooo-ray, so we all know they're available in HD! Now, mind you, I didn't stay on there to watch as I already have the Potter films on Brooo -- it's just something that caught my eye and kind of pissed me off because as a consumer I'm paying for the channel to broadcast in HD. Plus, when you know the movies are available in HD it just makes you more angry with networks that cheat the consumer. Does anyone know why the hell ABC Family HD would do that?

Who knows, It might've been HD but they compressed it so much that it looks like SD.
Believe it or not, the best looking HD reception you will ever get, and it's for free, is not via sattelite, nor cable.
Good ol' Aerial reception.

I know better than to think anything coming through pretty much ANY of the HD channels is gonna be worth a damn. Some of the Discovery channel stuff looks pretty good on the 720p LCD in the bedroom, but on the 1080p HD-ILA in the living room it looks terrible. My opinion on it is this: If you are paying for a service and the service is not delivering what it promises, find a service to pay for that does deliver and pay for that.

Tim,

The reason the "HD Family" channel shows movies in full-screen (and possibly in miserable upconverted SD) is because full-screen movies are "family friendly." Isn't that what some studios say on their DVD cases about standard-screen transfers: "Presented in a family friendly format." I mean, everybody knows widescreen is family "unfriendly." They're a plot against family values!

LMAO!!! Yeah, that's probably true, John.

First of all, I don't blame the satellite or cable provider because they're is no way it's their fault. (Think of it as the cable/satellite provider is the messenger, so don't shoot the messenger.) It's literally the fault of the actual network (ABC, NBC, Discovery, TNT, TBS, etc.). What these networks are supposed to do is present their programming in SD digital for their regular channels, but their HD specific channels are supposed to be in widescreen, hi-def. It just seems odd that the ABC Family HD channel would actually present a movie that is known to be in hi-def. Not only do I feel cheated, but it absolutely makes no common sense!? Now, the satellite provider I switched to last month (Dish Network), I purchased a package that is ALL HD only. It's really kind of frustrating because it's not at all Dish Networks fault that these channels that claim to be the hi-def versions of their programming would cheat people, and here we are, the customer, paying for it!

What's really annoying for me is that some of these HD channels (like A&E for example) don't know how to air HD programming properly. I mean, shows that were filmed in HD like CSI Miami look great, but then other shows look distorted! It's like they just stretch some of the full screen programming to fit a widescreen television and have the nerve to call it HD! What's even worse is that because these morons messed around like this, you can't even fix it by playing with aspect buttons on the remote.

I totally agree with that! Any of the Turner broadcast channels (TNT, TBS) are notorious for doing exactly that!

Tim, yea, I've noticed that whilst flipping through the channels looking for crap to watch...TNT and TBS I've noticed have all the wrong aspect ratios. Most of their 2.35:1 or 2.40:1 movies are blown up to fill the 16x9 screen and look stupid. I remember when I lived in New Jersay and had Comcast HD, HBO used to do the same thing. It pissed me off. Then when they first aired the Star Wars movies in hi-def (forgot if it as HBO or Showtime or another movie channel), they were shown correctly.

I know TNT and TBS air sporting events like NBA and MLB playoffs...at least those look good. They probably assume the majority of cable viewers aren't movie-holics and wouldn't notice the difference between a movie shown in its correct 2.35:1 aspect ratio vs. the same movie blown up to fill the screen. There are many home theatre discussion boards around where members post questions like, "Why do I see black bars on the top and bottom of my screen?" On cable, they don't have to worry about that, and we suffer because of their stupidity!

Hey, Tony...I stick with an antenna for HD service and the best of all, it's free

Back to the original beef at the top pf the thread...the problem is, it's simply the cost to a network for acquiring the rights to air a movie in the first place...the SD version will cost "X" dollars while the HD version will cost "Y" dollars, where "Y" is often twice what "X" is.

It is not that ABC Family doesn't want to give you the best viewing experience, they want maximum bang for their charged advertising dollar versus the cost of programming. If the bean counters, in the corporate offices figure they can make more for the company showing the SD version from their advertisers, then they are showing the SD version...simple as that...goes for all the networks...they are there to make money and in the process, they may actually entertain you...
