I guess someone missed the memo about some sort of Holiday Season this year...
Fanboys all around will blame this on the economy. Others will blame it on blu-ray.
I blame the snob-nosed execs that REFUSED TO LOWER THE RETAIL PRICE this year.

"And the problem for Sony isn't the recession, it's the PS3."

"The problems with the PSP are surprisingly similar to the problems with the PS3. It's overpriced ($170 to $130 for the DS Lite), has superior graphics no one cares about, and a mediocre game library."

I don't think some fancy bright portable screen (psp) nor some CUTE virtual 3d community (PS3) will save Sony this year. No one even cared about the the FREE NETWORK! Not even the release of the much-awaited KILLZONE 2 in February, will break sales.

It's the recession. People don't have the money... and we won't see some sort of financial stability until 2010. Sony MUST do the one thing that people will care about: LOWER-PRICED PS3.

Given the competition (from the xbox 360 & wii) & consumer confidence, what do u think is the (reasonable) magic price for the struggling console? I'm thinkin' $199 for a 40gb version.

Then again, for those none-gamers, u can get a standalone blu-ray next year for $199!

The dilemma that sony has created for themselves relates to all of the tech inside the ps3. They can only lower the price so much in order to recoop their losses on development.
I know that they are working on ways to cut costs on the ps3 but how long before the consumer sees any more substantial price cuts is up in the air. And don't forget that Japan gives the orders. So it all depends on what the big wigs over there decide to do.

Sony made sales of the PS3 because of its blu-ray player (video buffs preferred it for the all-in-one value).
Sony couldn't budge the PS3 price this Holiday Season, also because of its blu-ray player. It will only get worse once the standalone blu-ray players retail for $150-$199 for 2009.

NPD Figures Bring Out the PS3 Hate:

Quote:
The Washington Times didn't take the news of Sony's poor Playstation sales well. They're calling the sales fumble internal sabotage, and they're hopping mad about it.

Sure the Playstation 3 didn't do so well last month, selling 378,000 console sales in November, down from 466,000 last November. And the PS2 also saw a drop in sales, with the company moving less than half what they did last year.

But sabotage?

XBox 360 has made serious inroads by dropping the price of its core system to $199. So how did Sony respond?

By releasing a new version of the PS3 ... that's $100 more expensive. Yes, it comes with a game, and yes, it has more hard-drive space, to which I respond: Who cares? Was the marketplace clamoring for more memory from the PS3? Is that why its market penetration is so low compared to its predecessors and competition? What were the Sony execs thinking?

Times' Sonny Bunch goes on to talk about the PS3's lack of Netflix support, what he calls Sony's poor marketing of Blu-ray, his point seems to be that "Sony seems bound and determined to do everything in its power to hinder the market penetration of the system in particular and Blu-ray in general."

The column begs the question, is the Playstation 3 destined to be the Gamecube of this generation of consoles? Maybe there is some truth to the old adage that you can't really have three successful consoles on the market.

Sabotaging the Sony Playstation 3 market?

Sony's PS3 A Sinking Ship: Sales Plummet

(alleyinsider.com) -- Sony's (SNE) PS3 is dying on the shelves.

Alone among the three major videogame consoles, sales of the PS3 are down about 19% from November 2007, according to the latest stats from the NPD Group. Sony was only able to sell 378,000 PS3s this November, compared to 466,000 last year.

And the problem for Sony isn't the recession, it's the PS3. Microsoft (MSFT) put up respectable numbers with its Xbox 360, selling 836,000 units vs 777,000 in November 2007. And Nintendo's (NTDOY) Wii continues to dominate the market, more than doubling sales from 981,000 to 2.04 million.

So why is the PS3 flopping so badly?

It's the most expensive console on the market, $150 - $200 more than its rivals. Even if you believe the video game industry is "recession-proof" (it isn't), a tanking economy makes consumers more price-conscious.

The PS3's big bonus is its ability to double as a Blu-Ray player. Too bad no one seems to care about hi-def DVDs. The differences between Blu-Ray and DVD are hard to see on a TV less than 50".

The PS3 just doesn't have any must-have titles exclusive to the console. "LittleBigPlanet" has generated decent buzz but isn't a game-changer, and neither is Sony's new virtual world "Home."

There's really only one option left for Sony to remain in the game: deep price cuts, and not just for people with good credit. Tell yourself the PS3 has superior graphics if it makes you feel better, but a $400 console with a mediocre game library simply cannot compete against an Xbox 360 priced at $200 in this economy.

Zing! You know it's really looking bad for Sony when CNN of all places is reporting something like this.

Killzone 2 is NOT a PS3 exclusive. PS3 exclusivity is getting pretty rare nowadays.

Killzone 2 is published by Sony, it will only be on PS3. Unless it somehow makes its way to PC. An issue of Game informer made a typo by listing it as on X360 and PC also.

But who would care anyways since Killzone 2 will probably suck. The first Killzone was big pile of shit why would the 2nd one be any better?

KZ2 is just another thing that was hyped as making a difference but will most likely fail to deliver, like many Sony products.

Look, Sony is notorious for over-priced products and always will be! Why? Well, think about it. They spent copious amounts of money to make their hi-def format the big winner. And since they spread themselves thin by doing so, who do you think they're going to try and get to pay for that and make it all up? Can we say "the consumer"? Say it with me now, real slow, tttthhhheeeee cooooonnnsssuuummmeeeerrrrrr. Duh!

What's funny is all the risk they took, and their greedy tactics, to get blu-ray as the standard in hi-def format, they will actually lose on it while other corporations behind Blu-ray will benefit. Call it Karma, if you will, but screw other people and it will come back and bite you in the ass. They took the risk, in a rather aggressive way, and now they're paying the penalty for it. There is no way on God's green Earth I am ever going to lose sleep for Sony's misfortune. They made their bed and now they have to lay in it!

I'm surprised you don't lose sleep over the fact that Sony made 330 million net profit in their last quarter and currently have 7.5 billion dollars in cash. That is one serious misfortune. I feel the tears coming on already <------ tears.
