I just bought a Samsung 46" lcd tv and a PS3. I have them both hooked up with an HDMI cable and now want to set-up some surround sound. I currently have a Onkyo TX-SR302 5.1 receiver that has one optical and one coaxial input. Does anyone know if this is worth setting up since it doesn't have a HDMI input?? My tv has a optical output but I'm not sure how this works with HDMI. Thanks for the help!

I depends if you want HD audio or not. Since the only way to get HD audio with the PS3 is thru HDMI, but optical is still a great source for 5.1 digital sound.

Ok. So help me understand the connections. I would leave my HDMI from the PS3 hooked up to the tv which gives me "true" hd audio, right? Then connect my tv and receiver with one optical cable. This will give me digital audio when watching my HD stations?? Thanks for any clarifications.

you would have to run HDMI from the PS3 to your receiver, then from your receiver to your tv.

edit: so you can't get HD audio w/ that receiver.

Joker, since you are not going to get HD audio with your receiver or your TV, simply connect your PS3 to your receiver with either the optical or coaxial, doesn't really matter, and you will at least have 5.1 audio, which still sounds very good. Not sure what decoders your receiver has, so if the PS3 will decode Dolby Digital and DTS and send it via PCM, select that in the PS3 set up menu and your receiver shoud sound very good. It is worth it.

Don't forget, if you're going to use optical for your audio, you have to choose it in the audio options or else it will try sending the audio through HDMI. Unless of course your receiver has HDMI inputs then you're ok.
