I guess good ol' Microsoft KNEW about the SCRATCHY "feature" on your expensive game discs, whenever you place your XBOX 360 upright... http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/microsoft/archives/156941.asp?source=rss

Microsoft's reply? Lawyer stuff... http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/microsoft/archives/157043.asp

I don't think disc scratching is very common. They tell you not to move the console while a game is running, but who does that anyway?

I'm going to assume that most of the disc scratching cases that aren't from moving the console while playing a game is caused by the Hitachi disc drive used in older 360s.

I use to have an old Premium 360 with a POS Hitachi disc drive, it didn't scratch my game discs but it was loud as hell and it stopped reading discs after a few months.

Scratching discs/not being able to read them are common reported problems with the Hitachi disc drives.

Personally I think slot loading disc drives like the Wii has are better than regular old disc drives.

This won't go anywhere because anyone who know anything about optical drives in general knows that EVERY optical drive will do this. Grab your PS3 with one of your $30 BD movies loaded and quickly movie from a vertical to a horizontal position and then back again and see if the movie still plays. It's just people trying to take advantage of a situation to get some easy cash.

No, it's more serious than that. I have had the problem myself and I never move my xbox. It lays in horizontal position in an electronics cabinet. Some of my discs have been scratched in circular like the article says. I do believe I have the Hitachi piece of crap in mine. I've buffed out the discs with cloth and alcohol but it has pissed me off. Google it and you can find plenty of people that complain about this issue. Weird thing is that only certain games have done this in my console. GRAW and HALO 3 being problems for me.

However, this is nothing new. The first onslaught of first generation had bad drives too. Two of three i bought went bad. At least those didn't scratch discs(they just wouldn't read one period).

I keep coming back for more abuse though because LIVE and all the games Microsoft have are the best.
