How does everyone feel about their customer service? We're supposed to be getting DirecTV in our house soon and well... it seems that they may be shite. We were scheduled for service yesterday (Dec. 17th) between Noon and 4PM... He didn't show so around... 5:30, my dad calls DirecTV, they get ahold of the installer, and he says between 6 and 7. He gets here around 6:15 and leaves at about 6:35. He didn't want to do it because it was getting too cold out... understandable. Anyway... they were supposed to get a call today *the 18th* about rescheduling it. Either way... they didn't call. So Dad once again calls them... is put on hold about 5 times... and is told that we can be scheduled for the 28th of December. And that if there's an opening they will call us.

Seems a bit... shitty. My friend told me that they had bad customer service... but I never imagined this.

Anyone else have this kind of experience?

I'm a long time customer.

My biggest complaint is this:

They give all of these smokin' hot deals to new customers and completely hose long time existing ones.

It happens with cell phone companies, as well. Basically, any business that locks you under a contract for a couple years treats you like dirt as soon as you sign the dotted line. Odd that the service would already be crappy before the install was done. I'd tell'em forgetaboutit and go else where. Nevertheless, customer service for just about anything has gone to shit in this country . . . but let me tell you how I really feel. . .

Direct TV seems to receive more billing and customer service complaints than the Dish Network. You can see by doing a search at an excellent resource like the Ripoff Report

I hate the small fine print of contracts, and that's what Direct TV (and others) do in their ads. Like Tim said, once you are under contract they can elect to provide poor quality service -- as their main focus is always trying to add more customers. At least Dish -will- allow you to get their service WITHOUT signing a contract, although you usually won't get to receive those great introductory offers (months of free HBO etc) - but at least they can't damage your credit rating.

Remember, any time you give out your social security number (etc), you are enabling the possibility of a company could damage your credit rating if they want to (if you have a dispute etc). If they won't provide service without acquiring a SS#, then consider your local cable company.

I'll say one thing, for doing the shopping around thing last month and comparing prices and hidden fees. etc. It turned out that "Dish Network" was the better deal. At least they don't stick it to you once the first year is up and you know up front what you're getting into. Direct TV sticks it to you big time after your first year -- however, Dish will not but admits that prices my go up due to inflation and other common factors, meaning your bill might go up a couple bucks, so really no big deal.

Yeah... and what's a bummer is that Direct TV has those exclusive deals you can't get anywhere else (that I know of) - NFL Sunday Ticket, March Madness All-Game access, NASCAR circuit, etc.

They (Direct TV) have really been kicking in heavy advertising the last year, as once Cable goes to all digital next year the expansion of cable channels will increase in comparison to what satellite and at&t U-Verse offer. But if I were signing up for satellite, I'd pick Dish Network over Direct TV, and choose the no-contract service option (if you want to be fully independent of being attached by a "legal" obligation of service for a certain length of time).

It's really weird because we -currently- have Dish TV... I have no clue why we're switching...

Well, Dish probably did something to piss off the parents. I can assure you, Dish Network treats their customers like dirt, too. I should know, I've already run into a billing issue that they will not budge on (they basically will not allow me to choose the date in which I will let them draw money from my bank account. They do it on the 5th, which sucks for me because that's when mortgage and insurance are due!). As I said, all businesses that stick you under a contract treat you like the scum of the Earth once you've legally obligated yourself. Dish Network has the best deal going as far as "price" is concerned, but their CS sucks just as bad as any of the rest of their competition.

Yeah... probably. Who knows though? All I know is that after 20 years of life (Yeah yeah, I need to move out...) I'll finally have Satellite television in my room.
