Criterion has added two new Blu-ray releases to their list, both available on March 24. They are The 400 Blows (1959) and The Last Metro (1980).

The 400 Blows is a catalog release while The Last Metro is new to the Criterion collection and will be released on 2-disc DVD at the same time. Once again the Blu-ray releases are priced the same as the DVD versions.

Thanks Criterion!

Well . . . at least we're not talking about Batman!

Speaking of Batman...just kidding.

What do you guys think of these bluray Criterions so far? Are they worthy or should we just stick with the DVD versions?

I couldn't say, I have not seen any Blu-Crterion's. Besides, I usually don't care for really good movies.

I have been impressed with the ones I have picked up so far. Criterion masters their DVD releases in HD and has obviously been anticipating eventual HD releases of these films for several years. The image quality is great and is a very noticeable jump in quality from the DVDs.

The bonus features seem to be the same as the DVD releases but they do often pack all the features from a 2-disc DVD set onto one BD.

The only complaint I have if that they seem to have re-used the DD tracks from the DVDs rather than an uncompressed or DTS-MA encode. But these two latest titles are supposed to be uncompressed I believe.

Also you have to commend them for not charging a premium for BD. Yes their DVDs are already pricey but I'm sure they could have priced the Blu-ray releases higher and Criterion fans would have paid it. Instead they decided to price them the same and I think that is a nice gesture to us regular Criterion buyers.

FAIL

criterion is using DTS-HD, NOT dolby digital or dolby truehd.

I'm pretty sure at least one of the Criterion BDs I have has a DD 1.0 track. I don't have the disc in front of me so I could be mistaken. I will check when I get home.

It would seem you have taken this as an opportunity to ruin another thread for everybody.

"bottle rocket", "chungking express", and "the last emperor" all have DTS-HD MA tracks.

"the third man" has an LPCM track.

Anyway, I would recommend to anyone looking for a Criterion Blu-ray starter to pick up The Man Who Fell To Earth. The film does really look brilliant on Blu-ray.

I'm waiting for the only Criterion release that should be in Blu-ray . . . "Armageddon!"
