I bought a sony STR-DG720 receiver bundled with a sony BDP-S350 Blu-Ray player. Using an HDMI cable only, I get video passed through amp to TV, but get no sound out out of the speakers attached to the receiver. I have tried changing all possible audio options in both Blu-Ray player and receiver, but can only get sound using composite cables from the L & R front speakers.

I haven't tried a true "Blu-Ray" disc yet, I have only tried nornal DVD's with 5.1 Dolby sound. Does the disc have to be Blu-Ray in order to get sound using HDMI cable?

I should add, my receiver is being connected to my TV via a HDMI to DVI conversion cable, does the receiver detect this on the HDMI out port, that the connected device is not true HDMI and then suppress sound input from DVD player and not output to surround speakers?

Any ideas why the sound isn't being passed to speakers from HDMI cable. Is there a noticable degradation of sound quality if I were to use a Digital Coax connection for sound and still use the HDMI for video output?

Thanks,

NO. HDMI will pass all audio.

no ideas as of yet as to why you are not getting sound. it COULD be a bad hdmi cable. regarding the second question, "yes" there will be a degradation in sound quality if you use coax because you will not be able to pass the lossless codecs using this method. you will get a "core" dolby digital or dts track depending on the encoding. these don't sound bad, they sound rather good, but still there is degradation. does your br player have analog out? if so, try this. analog out WILL pass the losless codecs to the reciever.

It could also be an internal setting in your bd player e.g., PCM or Bitstream or some other related setting. I had the same problem with my Panasonic BD-30 (no sound) until I actually read the book and flutzed around with the settings.

Make sure the receiver is set to input audio through that HDMI input. Make sure the BD player is bitstreaming through HDMI. Turn off HDMI sync options. Try achieving audio through Coax, or Optical connections. On Sony receivers they have a tendacy to sometime not recognize auto inputs. Change to a dedicated setting such as COAX Only, Optical Only, or HDMI only. Worst case situation is to upgrade from Sony into Pioneer, Onkyo, Yamaha, or Marantz!

I'm making some progress. When I unhook the HDMI to DVI cable from the receiver to the TV, suddenly I get surround sound from all speakers, but obviously no video. I read that some receivers will detect the connected output component. It seems that it is detecting a DVI connected component and is killing the audio input, and thus no output sound to the speakers.

I'm going to get a digital coax cable and run it using component video and see if that works. I may have to pass on the HDMI for now until I upgrade my TV at a later date.

My first hd setup was a Toshiba A35 HDDVD player to the receiver via a coax cable and then the HD DVD player to the tv via an hdmi with a dvi adapter to the tv. I kept on having quickie dropouts with that cable so I changed to a dedicated hdmi>dvi cable which cost me dearly. If you are using an adapter, you might want to try a dedicated cable. Also, try turning your tv on first, then the bd player and then the receiver, in that order.

Problem solved! Well sort of, had to scrap the idea of using the HDMI to DVI conversion cable. For some reason my receiver detects that the output is connected to a DVI TV and kills the sound input from the HDMI cable coming from the Blu Ray player.

I had to resort to using composite cables and digital coax audio cable. I am finally getting video and surround sound.

DVI does not carry sound, it never has. It just does the video. That's why you were not getting sound.

i think we both know that, but the HDMI-DVI is going to the tv, from a audio receiver therefore it doesnt need to carry any audio, the problem is, the HDMI cord from blu-ray to av receiver is not giving us audio through the receiver
