Hey guys,

My wife picked up the above receiver for me for Christmas. Got it all hooked up (quickly). I have both audio and video going to the receiver via HDMI (PS3 is passting audio via bitstream). The problem is, is that about 5 to 10 min into either playing a game or watching a blu movie, the screen will go blank and no audio will come through the receiver. Occasionally it will start back up with only a momentary lag and occasionally it will all need to be rebooted to get it going.

I'm thinking some sort of HDMI syncing issues, but I'm not entirely sure which settings I would change on what device?

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Uni

Have you done all of your firmware updates with your PS3? That I know was a cause of some issues that are fairly common. Make sure that HDMI sync is off, and some of the other HDMI corrections tools are also off, to start. Loss of Picture and Sounds usually starts with the source.

Thanks Reg,

The PS3 has the latest updates on it. I agree I believe it is between the PS3 and the receiver and not the television. When the blanking occurs I lose audio which is independent of the television. I've went through the PS3 settings and there is nothing in there that is blantantly apparent in terms of automatic HDMI configuration (or I'm missing it).

I'm wondering if it is because I'm passing both audio and video via the HDMI..Perhaps I should run the audio via optical..to rule out bandwidth issues?

Unieye, try switching the audio on the PS3 to PCM instead of Bitstream. That way the PS3 decodes all the audio internally. It may help.

Falcon,

I'll give that a shot and report back.

Make sure the ONKYO HDMI monitor is turned on. I have the 605 and I had HDMI problems between the TV, PS3 and the ONKYO during setup. Each time it was an issue with the HDMI handshake between the TV and the receiver. In your case Falcon seems correct, have the PS3 decode and send it PCM.

So I switched to PCM, and I'm still running into the same issue. To further make things interesting, it doesn't necessarily have to be playing a movie. Even when the PS3 menu screen is idle, I will experience the same issue.

With regards to the Onkyo HDMI Monitor, this is the second reference to this. I've searched the manual and some other sources but I can't seem to find out how to locate this setting. Any additional information on that would be helpful. I'm going to do a few things tonight and report back again.

Unieye, if the "Onkyo HDMI Monitor" monitor thing doesn't work out I would try replacing the HDMI cable. If either of those does not fix the issue there may be a hardware problem with the PS3.

Do you have a friend with a PS3 that you could try out?

Falcon,

Thanks for the advice. However, I've had this PS3 over a year now and up until this Christmas it has been plugged directly into the TV via HDMI (Bravia something or other).

I suppose that it could be the PS3, but I'm really wondering about the HDMI cables...and if they are possibly the potential problem..I did not realize that there were different versions of HDMI and hence different versions of cables. Is it possible that one of the cables that I'm using is a version crappy and because of that, the bandwidth from a to b is not sufficient?
