And it's not a flipper disc!

It sure took long enough to happen, but one of HD DVD's biggest benefits has finally made it over to the Blu-ray side. Yep, we're talking about a Blu-ray / DVD hybrid disc, with a single-layer of Blu on one side and a standard DVD on the very same side (as in, not a "flipper" disc). Not surprisingly, the action's going down first in Japan, with Code Blue emergency helicopter doctor Blu-ray BOX (yes, seriously) as the first hybrid title. There's no word on when (or if) this technology will make it to US soil, but the sooner the better -- nothing like a little inbuilt backwards compatibility to ease the mind.

Didn't the Blu Ray folks say they would (could) never do this during The War? I think it's great news if it actually materializes. Then maybe they will dump Digital Copy, which will probably bomb on its own volition anyway. And, of course, there's the matter of $$$...THE PRICE...$$$? If it's too high, they are going to shoot themselves in the foot. Again. We shall see.

I hate to be the nay sayer, but I doubt this will become mainstream. It's similar to the DualDisc format. It looks great in theory, but when you factor in the restriction to one layer (which was also a problem with DualDisc) and the fact that it will always cost more than making a separate DVD/Blu-ray it will not catch on.

I did a number of CD/DVD packaged releases for bands and they would always want to go for DualDisc until they found out that they could press a separate CD and DVD and package them in one case for a fraction of what a single combined DualDisc would cost. The same thing will be a problem here.

What is funny that a HD DVD/BluRay disc is in the works, for when the market secretly switches back to HD DVD...

Are you referring to the Blu-ray/DVD hybrid we are talking about here or the HD DVD/Blu-ray hybrid aka 'Total HD' that was to my knowledge abandoned even before HD DVD died?

Naw, he's kidding. But wouldn't it be ironic if HD DVD had a resurgence? lol

The one that Sony was afraid of. If Toshiba had their way it was that close to trial. Ironically enough, I was going to post a thread last night, but chose not too. Ironically enough all digitally assigned drivers for my so called Blu-Ray rom in my computer point to HD DVD drivers, and code. Is that a MS not wanting to adapt seperate or real BD drivers, or is there a sham amongst our feet. Anyways the Chef is right, I do not believe we have heard the last of HD DVD.

I read this news too last week (I check EngadgetHD every day), but didn't feel it was newsworthy enough (for a News article here the site), since it's only in the Japanese market for now, still being tested, the program content on these discs will sell for hundreds(!) of dollars, and no potential North American releases (or use) is even on the horizon. But it's definitely worth posting here on the Msd Bds though (thanks Falcon).
