I read on Amazon.com that a blu-ray version of "Amadeus" is due for release on February 10, 2009. It is a 2-disc set, but it looks like it may only be the "Director's Cut". (I saw the Director's Cut on SD and didn't like it. Comparing it to the Theatrical Release gave me a whole new appreciation for editing! I thought the Theatrical Release was wonderful. The Director's Cut included a lot of unnecessary scenes that, I felt, didn't add to the picture enough to justify keeping them in. Obviously the editors thought so too.)

In any event, the amazon site doesn't have much in the way of details. Does anyone know if this February release includes the Theatrical Release or if the T.R will be issued separately in Blu-Ray format? Thanks.

Sorry, I didn't see your comments about the Director's Cut. But I guess that shows that some directors shouldn't mess with success. "Amadeus: The Director's Cut" = too many notes!

Sylvia...

According to the previous "Amadeus" DVDTOWN News Story on the forthcoming Blu-ray (Feb 10), it will feature the Director's Cut only (+ bonus music CD). The DC includes 20 additional minutes and improved sound.

Many fans of the film (like myself) don't mind 20 more minutes of this classic...

Argh! @ the Blu Director's Cut. Thanks. I should have checked on the site first before starting the thread. Coincidentally, while you were posting, I did look it up and found the following - I'll share it here for anyone else interested:

Quote:
The Blu-ray edition will feature the longer "Director's Cut" version of the film (180 minutes), which adds 20 minutes of footage not seen in the original theatrical version. The director's cut is Rated R (for brief nudity), unlike the PG-rated version that played in theaters. The winner of the "Best Sound" Oscar, this Blu-ray edition of Amadeus will be a sonic treat, along with the high-def 1080p quality of Blu-ray.

At this time, Warner has not yet provided any details as to bonus features, other than the set will include a special music CD compilation, and deluxe Digibook packaging. We will update this story when more info is known.

At least it has a music CD, too. Eine Kleine Fantastisch Musik!

Oh my, Joe! Thanks for posting. I'm glad "Amadeus" is getting the Blu-treatment, I'm just hoping the Theatrical Release will get it sometime soon, too.

I've noticed that a lot of "Directors Cuts" wind up the primary version given an upgrade. (For example, the 1990's Theatrical version of "Last of the Mohicans" never made it to DVD in the USA - only the "Director's Cut Expanded Edition".) I think the original version of "Das Boot" may have sunk beneath the wave of upgrades, too.) I wish more original versions would be released in state-of-the-art formats. Maybe the studios can't afford to issue too many versions of the same film, so they go with the one they think will make the most money? I tell you, if they put the Theatrical Release of Amadeus on Blu, I'll plunk down some cash - but not for the D.C.

I understand your thinking Sylvia, but it's only 20 minutes (and more music too).

Now, those Lord of the Rings "Extended editions" are a real chore to sit thru, if you are only a casual fan like myself. Each has about 50 to 60 extra minutes, and some of that extra stuff is just begging to be trimmed, which they did for the theatrical version.

But usually, a longer Director's Cut is more preferred by fans, especially if it involves more action (Pearl Harbor), violence (Natural Born Killers etc), or sex/nudity (Caligula etc).

Next week, a restored special edition of the 1980 horror film MY BLOODY VALENTINE is being released on DVD from Lionsgate, with never-before-seen violence that was forced out of the original Director's Cut back then to receive an R rating.
