So noted. I've gotta ask, though, what exactly is a gay pride salute? Is that two lesbians and a turkey baster? A twink shooting up? The rainbow flag? A pink triangle?
Besides, what the heck does being gay have to do with anything? You can't appreciate or admire a story based on being transgender (not gay, by the way) because you're straight?
Quote:Swank just played gayboy and then tomboy and won 2 awards for basicly the same method of acting.
Yeah, you've hit a sore spot with me today. Please explain how she played gayboy. I know how someone can play stereotypically gay and I know how someone can play stereotypically straight. What, exactly, goes into playing gayboy?

View profile »what "sore spot", did i hit? i have every right to express my opinion about hilary swank and the movie in question as you do jason. maybe the term "gayboy" offended? if so, then i am sorry for i meant no harm by it. maybe if a little bit of that gay pride wouldn't have crept in you would have seen it as "a gay boy"? but you seem to want to turn it into something that it is clearly not. please see my feelings about brokeback mountain, and you will surely come to the conclusion that i'm very open minded about all kinds of subject matter.
if you would like to know my feelings about what goes into playing a gay boy, a gay man, a gay girl, or a gay woman, i would have to say that i really do not know for i am not an actor. (but according to hendrix's thread below...alot went into swanks portrayal of this character) still, that doesn't mean that i have to like it. personally the tone of the movie made me sick, rather than the subject matter. but what really threw me off was the fact that i did not buy into swank for reasons already mentioned.

Eddie,
I thought you were done crawling up Spielberg's ass. Say hello to Armond White for me while you're in there.

View profile »When the film was being promoted, the hype build up was strong, and deservedly so. I and two friends had heard about the film's background story, and were intrigued with how well the filmmakers and actors could pull it off realistically. All of us left the theater stunned, as EVERYTHING in the film was so well-done(!), that another project in the works about the real person (Brandon Teena) was dropped by the producers after they got a look at an early version of "Boys Don't Cry". Swank is a quality actress, and I'll go on record as saying I'm also a fan of much of her other work, including that poorly received CGI-horror film [release]21797[/release]
As for Boys Don't Cry, IMDB.com presents some interesting production trivia...
* To prepare for her role, Hilary Swank lived life as a man for at least a month, including wrapping her chest in tension bandages and putting socks down the front of her pants much the same way that Brandon Teena did.
* Working title: "Take It Like a Man."
* The movie is based on the life of 'Brandon, Teena'.
* When Hilary Swank was living as a man to prepare for the role of Brandon Teena, she was so convincing that her neighbors believed that the young man coming and going from Swank's home (Swank in male character) was a visiting brother of hers.
* Director Kimberly Peirce said that she used the same shots in the opening roller rink scene that were used in The Wizard of Oz (1939) when Dorothy first left her house and entered the land of Oz.
* Hilary Swank won the lead role of Brandon/Teena after hundreds of other actresses had been considered and rejected over the course of three years. She told director Kimberly Peirce that, like her character, she was also 21 and came from Lincoln, Nebraska. But she was fibbing, and when Pierce later confronted her with the lies, she responded, "But that's what Brandon would do."
* The title of the film is taken from a song by The Cure. A cover of the song also plays in the background at one point.
* Diane Keaton originally considered directing with 'Drew Barrymore' in the lead.
* All the actresses in the film (Chloë Sevigny, Alicia Goranson and Alison Folland) actually auditioned for the role of Brandon.
* Katherine Moennig auditioned for the role of Brandon/Teena
* The director, Kimberly Peirce, first came across the story when reading a long article in Village Voice written by Donna Minkowitz which was printed a few months after the murder.
* Premiere voted this movie as one of "The 25 Most Dangerous Movies".
Finally, I feel that Swank's performance here (qreat acting) will often be compared to any future roles of when one actor portrays a character of the opposite sex than there own. I highly recommend the real-life documentary DVD on Brandon Teena, if you want to learn more about the real-life tragic story.

It means she did a good job of making the part convincing. I saw this film for my first time last week, and IMO, she did a great job and deserved the award she received. Sure, from a "straight" guys point of view the movie might have seemed strange to accept. However, that's what makes an actors performance above average. IMO, she achieved going beyond what we expect to see an actor do, and that would be to act as something beyond what the person really is in real life.

Come on. Everyone knows this is one of my pet subjects.
Quote:i have every right to express my opinion about hilary swank and the movie in question as you do jason.
Never ever said you didn't. Nor would I ever say you were wrong for having an opinion or expressing it. I objected to some of the terms used. Not because they were offensive, but because they are factually incorrect or need further clarification.
Quote:maybe the term "gayboy" offended? if so, then i am sorry for i meant no harm by it. maybe if a little bit of that gay pride wouldn't have crept in you would have seen it as "a gay boy"?
See above. I'm not offended in the least. However, as stated before Brandon Teena is not gay. Period. The correct term is transgender. More that that, I simply asked what you meant by playing a gayboy. What exactly does that mean? If you don't know-quite frankly, I don't know either-then the term doesn't get used. (Kinda like saying someone didn't "play heterosexual well." How does one properly play heterosexual? Do we use stereotypes?)
Quote:but you seem to want to turn it into something that it is clearly not. please see my feelings about brokeback mountain, and you will surely come to the conclusion that i'm very open minded about all kinds of subject matter.
Again, never said you weren't open minded. We have a difference of opinion, which if 100% fine by me. My only objection was to the improper use of terms.
Quote:if you would like to know my feelings about what goes into playing a gay boy, a gay man, a gay girl, or a gay woman, i would have to say that i really do not know for i am not an actor.
Okay. Then how can you say she didn't play a "gayboy" well? If you don't know what that means, then how can anyone make a judgment on the portrayal? If I'm watching Speed and see Keanu Reeves trying to stop the bus, does it make any different if I know what it's like to be a cop or not? No. All that matters is that the performance is genuine and proper for the story.
Quote:still, that doesn't mean that i have to like it.
Again, we agree.
Jason
