Lemme say:

Congrats to Richard Jenkins!
No Dark Knight or Wall-E?

I'm also very surprised by the love for Milk. We're making plans now to go to AMC's Best Picture marathon as soon as the date is announced.

I was thinking about this at the Y this morning.

I had Dark Knight, Wall-E, Wrestler, Slumdog and and an "OTHER" as the noms. I was just a little off, apparently.

It's a good thing most people dismiss the Oscars as just another awards show about industry folk patting themselves on the back. Ever since they have come about, it's always been about the People's Choice Awards anyway. Oscar's are meaningless in my book.

I agree Spoonie G, the Peoples Choice Awards seems better.

i agree.
Although oscars are essential for the hollywood insiders.
It's not just celebs and producers padding each others back, it's a business plan.
You get an oscar and ur an actor, u going rate just got 25% higher. Ur a director and u got an oscar, it gets amazingly easier to greenlight a script you have because every production company/producer is drooling all over you.

You do music, sound or editing, you have a gazillion propositions waiting for you at your doorstep.
You never saw "Academy award winner -actress name- " or "academy award nominee -actors name" in a trailer or a dvd cover before??? Ofcourse, nowadays the "star system" lost it's pull of audiences as people get more and more objective and usually go for originality and a good story.
But you can still milk the "academy award winner" cow.

Keep an eye open after the ceremony when the tv ratings will be up, i bet it will be a lot more than last year (Mainly due to Heath Ledger and The Wrestler)

Btw, why is the dark knight up for best CGI? I mean, the whole thing was almost 100% practical effects, i can't remember any cgi apart from the campy shots of batman jumping over buildings and those disgusting "sonar" stuff.

No, what's up with TDK and makeup?? Makes no sense...how about Hellboy II for costumes?

Please, get over TDK not getting any love...now you know the cold hard truth...

EDIT: Maybe Milk will redeem Brokeback's loss...at least it will do for Ledger...and no best special effects for Speed Racer OR Iron Man???? Specially Iron Man?? And Speed Racer???

it's funny how the fanboys were drooling for oscar noms, but as soon as the noms were announced, you guys pooh-pooh the oscars exactly the same way that chris and i have for years (i.e. they're just statuettes given from industry insiders to other industry insiders).

"people's choice" is a dangerous concept...the "people's choice" gave us eight years of george w. bush.

s_coaster,

a lot of the stuff with the batpod (the motorcycle) was CGI, though the best VISUAL effects (not best CGI) category existed before computer-generated effects were prevalent in the industry (i.e. the award the used to be given out for matte paintings, wire stunts, miniature work, etc.).
