I can't believe that Clint Eastwood's Gran Torino isn't getting that much attention. I saw it yesterday, and was completely mesmerized by the experience, by the storytelling and how well it criticizes today's youth. Ironically, is today's youth who will react negatively at the movies ending, which emphasizes the main character as a very unconventional hero.

Oh, and this movie makes Benjamin Button look like CRAP.

No, shooting on video instead of film made Benjamin Button look like crap.

Regardless of the actual quality of the video feed, it's just not good looking...unlike Brian Singer's films, all of them beautifully shot...Button needed to be less wide, and Valkyrie needed to be wider...still, Button IS crap...

No, because Fincher is an overrated hack!

Overrated yes, but not a total hack. Fight Club was great.

Gran Torino's getting plenty of attention as far as I can tell. It's doing great at the box office, and has received plenty of love from critics. It's mildly surprising that the film got completely shut out by the Academy but they're burned out on Clint. But that wouldn't explain their insatiable appetite for Ron Howard.

I guess those five extraordinary films they nominated simply were too good to ignore.

LOL That was the worst one of all his works.

Or the Academy has overdosed on idiot pills last year.

Well, for the most part, it just didn't do it for me. I couldn't understand what Fincher was trying to make me feel for the character -- whether I should pity him, connect with him or tell the guy to " shut up and get over it"! Once you realize the guy has cooked up some imaginary, alter ego with Tyler and that he's simply beating the crap out of himself while making soap on the side just seemed utterly stupid to me. I don't feel the film ever made any kind of conveying focus, let alone sense, other than to create a bunch of over analyzing dialog on life so Fincher could say, "Ooh, look how important I am!" What's odd is I love strange and bizarre films, but I just don't admire the way Fincher chooses to deliver his product. I just don't understand what vision or message he was trying to convey to the audience, other than trying to look self important by making himself look like an "artful" film director. Through most of the movie, I wondered if even Fincher knew what he was trying to accomplish? IMO, he tried too hard to make things so complex that I wasn't interested in paying any attention, thus it just came across utterly boring.

It's funny this gets brought up because my 16-year old daughter loves "Fight Club" and we were just talking about it last night. It drives her crazy that I don't care for the movie when she knows I love weird films. And to be honest, Chef, I really wish I could feel the same as you and others feel about it, because I feel like I'm missing out on some kind of profound joy by not being more accepting of it. Nevertheless, I did like "Se7en".

. . . But, big Daddy Timmy didn't like "Zodicrap" . . . I mean, "Zodiac".

By the way Chef, you do realize I mean no disrespect for your opinion of the movie? Chris thinks I'm a big bully, but I don't mean to be as I just tease a lot.
