Ok these movies sucked either way but I need to get this off my chest...
Why do some movie makers insist on crappy narration by the main character. YES WE SEE YOU CAN TELEPORT OR COUNT CARDS AND IT IS CHANGING YOUR LIFE, why do we need a narration of exactly what we are seeing. These two movies wouldn't be good either way but the narration just makes them so stupid and unbearable to watch.

I haven't seen 21 but I did see Jumper. I think Jumper could have been better if someone other than Hayden Christensen was the main character. Don't get me wrong, I think he can be a good actor but I think someone else with more grit would have filled the role much better and then Jumper would have had more potential.

I guess you were not counting all of the loop holes in the story. Sure they were jumpers through portal holes, but the script didn't need to take that sort of a beating...

The run time was also a problem. At 88 minutes for Jumper, there wasn't enough time for the story to get into gear.

The simply use of a firearm (GUN), would have solved the problems for both the bad buys (Samuel Jackson, etc) wanting to kill jumpers, and/or the jumpers wanting to rid themselves of the bad guys!

All of the fire and mental-flash "battles" ETC could have been avoided if one had used a gun, cause as far as I know neither the bad guys or the jumpers are immune to BULLETS - hello!

JUMPER - corny movie and overall a waste of time (and I did see it on Blu-ray too).

In some cases it's an attempt to patch together a shaky plot, and sometimes it's just because they think it is a cool thing to do. Narration by a main character can be a very effective tool when used in the right way. Narration tends to work when it is filling in the inner monolog of the character. It gets you inside their head and conveys what they are thinking. This is basically the same point of view that the vast majority of novels use.

It works well in the right film, but so many use it in the wrong film, in the wrong way and to overstate things that we already know are going on. In fact a lot of problems with bad films can be attributed to writers and directors copying things that were cool in other film with no understanding for what made them cool in that context. Any tool has it's proper use. A sledgehammer may be a cool way to knock a hole in a wall, but it's probably not the best way to repair jewelry.

everyone likes to be "master of the obvious" from time to time, which explains the excessive use of voiceover narration. another recent example is "rocknrolla".

many of my favorite films have V.O. Narration...
(TAXI DRIVER, AMADEUS)
But it's a tricky thing to do, i mean, if ur saying what ur showing then it becomes a radio play accompanied by relevant images.

I hated both movies mentioned above, i thought jumper was a waste of my time and "21" yet another gambling flick with dudes punching each other in a basement somewhere near a casino.

P.S.
Question for Americans reading this: Is "BOY A" out in the states or near release?

It is. It's a Miriam Collection disc from Genius/Weinstein IIRC. (Even included it in my 2008 Top Ten...)

The one time that stands out in my mind where I really liked the voice over narration was in the theatrical version of Blade Runner, especially in the end when he's on the rooftop and the last replicant (Rutger Hauer) dies. It was good to see what he was thinking in those moments and I'm so glad they included this version in the HD DVD and Bluray releases.
