ive had the ps3 for about 11 months, valentine day was coming up so i just signed up for netflix so i decided to order one of my gf favorite movie on blu ray(Pearl Harbor). sat nite rolls around get the movie out, put it in.......nothing. Wont read! i tired another blu ray.... nothing! pulled out a dvd.....nothing! turn off the system....turn it back on..... put movie back in.....NOTHING!..... CRAP!
Get out the old lap top go to google type in ps3 wont read disc..... OH DAM! i find about 100 or so sites sayn my blu ray disc reader is screwed and this is a very common system failure for the ps3.....GREAT! I hardly ever use this system other than blu ray movies, i own no games for it, and dont even use it as my main dvd player, usually when u spent 400 bucks on something it use to last, what ever happened to those days! but no worries i have my warrenty to fall back on, all of 8 days left lol. Oh i put my copy of pearl harbor that i own on dvd in my hddvd player and we watched that version, so valentines day wasnt totaly ruined.

Hey don't be too sad, my Projo Bulb blew up in the middle of the Oilers game on Satuday afternoon. I rented a couple of flicks for Saturday evening, and had to watch them on the 37" instead. That was a bit of a let down...

So you spent 400 on a PS3 to just watch Blu Ray movies? And you hardly even use it? And you own no games, why not take that 400 and spend it on a stand alone player. I mean for 400 you could have purchased a Panasonic stand alone player at the time you bought your PS3 and had some change to buy a couple Blu Ray movies.

Or with $400 you could've bought 2 Insignias...like Onkyo...

Don't feel that bad, I my brother's XBOX 360 died for third time a few days back...

Had my 360 die twice. After the second time microsoft sent me a new system so I guess I can't be too upset. I had a ps3 for about 5 months and I sold it to get a stand alone player just for the reason this thread was started. One thing that always bothered me though with the ps3. Why doesn't Sony offer extended warranty support for them? They offer extended warranties for all their other products except the ps3. I know they feel confident in their products but it just seems strange to me that they don't offer them. There are other options though like store warranties or square trade.

i bought the ps3 becuase it was the best blu ray player on the market at the time and probably still is, no other blu ray player that i know of has wifi built in for updateing purposes, also i can stream movies from my computer to the ps3 via file share cant do that on a stand alone, also blu ray wasnt a finialized format when i bought my ps3 they were still releasing updated bd live stuff for the players. Also i do play video games but i found out i perfer to use my xbox 360 for gaming, all my friends have live.

Exactly the same problem mine had, but mine was only 2 months old at the time. Its a pain in the ace, they have to ship you a box, then you ship the system to them, then you wait for them to fix it, then they ship it back. It took 21 days from the time I called customer service to the time I was using it again.
