In what may be really good news director Peter Jackson and exective producer of LOTR Mark Ordesky are talking about a film version of The Hobbit. Peter will have to wait until King Kong is done but it sure sounds like a great idea - lets keep our fingers crossed. :)

You know what I want them to attempt to do? The Silmarillion. Actually, I am kind of divided on that issue. For one this, The Silmarillion would be a great looking film, but then again it is a book that should just be read. But I swear, if someone wants to make a film version of Dante's Divine Comedy, I will just have to go Kill Bill style on all of them.

I think once fans first found out about LOTR coming out on film, we ALL thought about the Hobbit naturally coming later on. Let's hope Peter Jackson does do it. As for books that "sound like a good idea" to put to film... I quote the great Stephen King "comparing books to movies is like comparing apples to oranges" they're two entirely different things. What may work well on the screen, may not work as well in print, and vice versa.

it all depends on the tolkien estate's willingness to sell film rights to certain people. otherwise, there is no discussion.

Maybe he could start on the twelve book series "The History of Middle Earth"?;)
I heard that PJ is trying to get the movie rights. The rights I believe are owned by New Line but the distribution rights are owned by another major studio - can't remeber who.
Ian McKellan has already shown interest in being Gandalf again.
(It shouldn't be a problem getting the same eagles either.)
Don't know about Elrond though.

New Line owns the production rights, but MGM/UA owns the distribution rights.
However, with PJ and Ian McKellan interested, with some of the production in place from LOTR, and with a lot of money up for grabs, this obstacle should be able to be overcome. PJ is planning to release "King Kong" in December of 2005 so 2007! might? be the year? Also, the Tolkien estate issued a statement saying they would not try to obstruct a Hobbit movie..........2007?

Re: The Hobbit

RUMOR: Sony is in negotiations to buy MGM.
If this happens, would this help or hinder The Hobbit movie? ?

It may delay the release if it were to be filmed, but it would not prevent the movie from being made. Plus, as well as the LOTR Trilogy, would any company really keep Peter Jackson from releasing it? I don't think so. It was sad to see the end of The Lord of the Ring Trilogy end, because of this, The Hobbit will probably kick so much major ass that it wouldn't even be funny. It's just too popular of a series.
