First trailer online for Michael Man's Public Enemies:
http://www.apple.com/trailers/universal/publicenemies/

However, I don't like what I see. He is using the same color grading/cameras as he did with Miami Vice. It looked good in that movie because it is set in current time. However, a gangster movie from the 30s is not supposed to look like it is shoot with a handheld digital camera. It simply put doesn't connect you with the era. Hopefully the final product will be better since I normally love Man's work.

That's odd, I don't think it looked anything like "Miami Vice". It looked like a very clear and sharp picture to me, whereas "Miami Vice" looked like it was filtered through crap.

Not to mention the sound in Miami Vice sucked.

I saw this trailer in the theatre before Watchmen and then watched it again on Apple Trailers. It looks 100% worse in the theatre. You notice huge amounts of digital noise, blown out highlights and for some reason a lot of scenes are shot at 1/24 shutter rather than the normal 1/48 giving the motion a weird look which I can't see being and intentional effect. It sometimes even switches within a scene (as best I can tell from the trailer). Oh and the sound noticeably sucked in the theatre.

Digital capture still has major disadvantages compared to film, but to my bewilderment Michael Mann films seem to look especially crummy. It seems since Collateral his films have been rapidly falling down hill in terms of story, acting and image quality. It's like he doesn't care and has just decided to phone it in.

I saw it on Apple Trailers first and didn't notice anything. But, when I saw it played before Watchmen (digital projection, big-ass screen), the digital look was VERY noticeable. It didn't bug me so much on Miami Vice, but for a movie in the 1930's...

I really hope Michael Mann tweaks things in post.

You can't 'tweak' these kinds of problems in post. Wrong shutter speed and over-exposure are permanent. Digital noise can be reduced somewhat but at the cost of image sharpness.

I liked Miami Vice and felt that the digital look (lack of a better term) fitted the story and movie. However, it does not fit Public Enemies. Of course the full movie could change my view on this.

That said, digital doesn't mean you can't make the films look and cary the period they come from. David Fincher did this remarkably well in Zodiac.
