Microsoft has confirmed that its next release of it's Windows OS will not natively support Blu-ray playback.

Like Apple, Microsoft claim the royalties demanded for playback are prohibitive.

Well, nice pictures.....

However, it is a very valid point.

I was disappointed to not see blu-ray drives in Apple's new Mac Pro series.

Hopefully, they will include it when Blu-ray licensing will be made simple

Geez, the BDA needs to get their act together with the licensing. It would be nice to have native support in Windows for sure.

You know... I totally understand not wanting to make a Blu-Ray Drive for the Xbox 360... but... this? That's a little sad. But understandable... I guess.

That will teach Sony for being greedy. Truly a sad situation. The consumer gets the axe because of greed. Can you imagine the flexablility if HD DVD was the winner? Ultimately Apple, wouldn't have adopted HD DVD either. But at least MS would have fully launched HD DVD. You never know, a new format still may arise.

I don't blame Microsoft for this. It's not worth the money for them. Windows media player doesn't play DVDs either until you install some kind of dvd software that provides the codecs. I have Nero dvd/cd burner software that also installs the codecs needed to use Media Player for DVD viewing. I'm sure it will be the same with Blu Ray.

Also, for DVD playback, videolan seems to be pretty good software and it's freeware. www.videolan.org

Maybe they will provide similar freeware for Blu Ray too :-)
