I just read an article from Gizmodo talking about how younger folks PREFER the sound of highly compressed audio over uncompressed audio. Have a read and plase, share your thoughts on these young'uns.

Personally, I don't mind my music in 128 kbps when I'm in my car or at the gym, but when I'm home, if I have something on CD that I feel like listening to, I usually play that, rather than my iPod, through my home theatre set-up.

As for vinyl...my father had a big collection of vinyl, but I was too young to appreciate it. Just recently, I sold my old Pioneer receiver to someone after upgrading to the Onkyo for Blu, and when I brought it over to his home, I helped him set it up. His wifr wanted it primarily for using her new turntable, and when I heard her old Bowie and Floyd LP's, I was amazed at the quality of stereo sound it produced! I almost wanted to buy a turntable that day!!

Compressed iPod files are more convenient, and they're easier to pirate, so it's no wonder young people prefer them. Also, the "sizzle" mentioned is distortion, which often results in the music sounding brighter, which young people may like because they're already losing their hearing in the higher frequencies.

Shame, really.

Italy,

I don't mind 128mbs either on my creative zen in the car. Just like you, when home, I put in a cd to enjoy in surround sound bliss. MP3 players just don't sound that great on a quality system. The only thing I notice about the MP3 in car is the bass doesn't sound as good as when I throw a cd in the dash player.

I have almost all of my compressed music in Mp4 (AAC) encoded at 192k, The highs and lows sound better than a mp3. It's good for my car and at the computer but it's def not the best. My PO is that nothing compares to how amazing loss less audio sounds from a blu-ray.

Why is that? Why not just flac it up like almost everyone else does? Although my ear might not hear the diff anymore at my age, I still won't settle for lossy codecs considering space is so cheap today and not an issue.

Do you have any idea how much flac'd music a terabyte can hold? Oh my.

I think many do other stuff when they hear music.

Normally, I work when I hear most of my music. iTunes and compressed audio is perfect for this. It allows me to carry my music around (I work at different locations) and hear what I like when I like.

However, when I want to sit down and just enjoy the music I put in one of my DVD audio or Blu-ray concert discs and listen to them in the home theater. This is where I got the speakers, the amp and best seating. Perfect!

I agree with Henning...I mean, when you are working out it doesn't really matter about the quality, because you can be listening to the gym's music, the radio or your iPod...still, I transfer all the CDs I buy in 320kbps mp3s, not mp4 or wma...

But since most of you continue talking about vinyl soooo much, I think I'll give a try to it...
