Look what they are doing now? This is insane! They will double their production costs to try to entice people to buy DVD's instead of rent them. I think it's a niche community of hardcore movie watchers who are interested in the extras anyway. I don't think the common everyday joe cares about the commentary track with one or two of the actors and the director or the movie trailer as was seen in the theaters.

I read this somewhere else recently, maybe in our own news section, I can't remember. In any event, Fox's releasing stripped-down editions for rental isn't a lot different from studios selling rental stores only single-disc editions for rental when they sell two-disc sets to the public. The studios probably figure that most people who rent don't have the luxury to spend hours and hours watching extras, anyway.

It's all about profit, and all the studios are experimenting to see what works to bring them the most money. It's what business is about.

Yeah... DVDTOWN News gave a report on this story (March 7) --

20th Century Fox will cut extras from rental-market discs - "Slumdog Millionaire, Marley & Me" first titles under new strategy, followed by "The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Wrestler, Notorious" and "Bride Wars".

I think if truth be told there are quite a few of the blu only companies that regret their decisions to turn away from hd dvd. Disney is almost proving this by releasing dvds with every major blu-ray disc release. And WB looks pretty stupid too deciding to release movies on china's version of hddvd when they could have made a much larger sum of money by sticking with releasing movies on both formats here in the U.S. And it will probably costs some execs their jobs as dvd sales continue to fall in the midst of our recession. Oh well, life goes on....

I'm amazed it didn't happen sooner. WB has been doing it. Sooner or later everyone will release bare bones "rental DVDs" Now what I would do is offer to rebate a purchases rental fee if they buy the movie. So if I purchase The Day The Earth Stood Still after renting it, I would be rebated the rental price. You could even do the same with PPV.

It does suck for consumers, but it's a good move for Fox and whoever else does it.
