Ok, how about films we all thought were great at the time, but over the years have lost their charm? Anyone want to play along?

Let me start:

Here's another: Was once great in the day, but now it's no more than a laughable comedy >>

You might be able to make a case for E.T. (though it still has it's charms, it doesn't have the impact now that it once did), I disagree about The Exorcist. I still think it's brilliant, and not funny in the least. Hell, even today, that picture you posted still creeps me out.

I watched this movie because it's supposedly a classic. I have no idea why, it's slow and plodding and I didn't give half a crap about any of the characters.

Never, ever, say that Lawrence has lost its charm...it's the best HERO movie EVER...above To Kill a Mockingbird, above TDK...go watch The Fast and the Furious if you want something fast...

Oh, and ET is really good, very well made, it endures time.

E.T. is an interesting one. I think as an adult it does not have the impact it once did when I was young BUT...I think young children today would still enjoy the story.

Exorcist scared me to death when I was young and now...yeah its a little laughable, maybe because I'm older? Still I wonder how young kids would react to it now. Kids are spoiled with lots of flash and effects these days.

My daughter was very young when ET came out. One rainy weekday afternoon, I took her and a friend to see the film. The theater was packed with kids and young moms and ME. I sat them down, and madea mad run for the refreshment stand. By the time I got back, the opening scenes were already rolling and I could hear these two stressed voices crying "Daddy, Daddy!" Suddenly this sexy adult female voice yelled, "Hey daddy come over hereeee." The whole theatre was rolling!

The Sound of Music. She must have watched that vhs tape 1000 times. I cringe every time I think of it.

Anything Star Wars. They haven't gone bad, just a bit boring... Heresy...here come the hit squads! (But I will buy them in bd if they ever come out).

True. The reaction my daughter and her friends had to the "Exorcist" was laughter over how fake the effects looked. I have to admit they do look a bit outdated, thus it seems to ruin the effect of the film being scary, so to speak. I mean, you have to admit the whole Split Pea Soup thing is pretty funny by today's standards.

In some ways, I don't think it's the effects in older films that tarnishes its quality -- especially in the horror genre. I think a lot of it has to do with the audience becoming more desensitized to the presented material. In other words, the more we look at the horrifying creature the less scary it becomes over time. Kind of like when fundamentalist peeps first heard the "F" word and it sent them into a coma. Now days people drop "F" bombs as though it were a natural part of communication. Point is, most people become desensitized to what is considered bad or evil over time. Then again, people always have fear over what they don't know or understand.

I am the reverse, Tim.

I hated ET then AND now.

I've always enjoyed the Exorcist.

"Dimmy, why would you do this to me, Dimmy?"
