and

www.onlive.com

basically this gizmo makes it possible for you to do play high-end video game titles over broadband in high-res with practically NOTHING Installed on your system or hooked up to your tv.

Although it sounds cool, i have to say, this latest "fad" to move everything up in the "cloud" is starting to worry me.

Btw, how come you can stream high-res graphics and audio AND game control data over broadband and not stream a properly compressed HD movie over a VOD service? Why does it have to look like sh*t? i know u'll say bandwidth and bitrate and i completely agree with you. But these guys are basically sending all that data back and forth and it looks fine. How far are we from proper HD movie streaming/downloads?

Maybe sony should take advantage of all this and the affiliation of the studios with their blu-ray format and launch a service that will basically stream titles too. I mean, most decent players have Ethernet connections.

They need a front-end web developer, that's my specialty.

If you seriously are Timmy, good luck.

To be honest... I'd rather stick with a console that could possibly get an RROD or have it's disc drive burn out. I also prefer owning my media ... on a disc.... in my bedroom... where I can say "Yeah I've got the steel book edition of Resident Evil 5, Mass Effect, and Lost Planet."

Giantbomb.com talked a bit about this last night on their podcast, and the main concerns were controller lag, a stable connection, and having to connect to the internet just to play a single player game.

i do understand your worries about controller lag and connections. I watched their presentation vid (which is very flat as far as presenting goes if you compare it to a steve jobs keynote) and what basically happens is the server calculates the next frame of the game and basically sends back a 5mbit video stream to your browser. it's still video, but it responds to your controls. Apparently what made this service possible is a compression method they developed that is installed in hardware form in their servers (these guys developed quicktime for apple and webtv in the past). So this compressor chews video down to 1 ms latency for a 5mbit stream. Which is a huge step forwards. Theoretically speaking, you'll always be one frame behind real time though. But that's a price many people are willing to pay if it means that they'll be able to run insane-looking graphics on low-end machines and older hardware. Same goes with internet for single-player and a good (and perhaps a bit more pricy) ISP. It's really a fraction of the cost that a high-end pc or a new console every two-three years will cost. It sounds like a good deal to me, but what really peaks my interest is the implementation of all that processing power those servers have and this new compression technology to HD movie streams.

Well, in this tough economy, I've been applying to many places along the west coast. If I did land that job, it would put me Palo Alto, California. Sure, California (say that like Arnold -- it has to be done) is an expensive state to live in, 27-percent higher than Phoenix according to some site calculators, but it would keep me close to John J. Puccio where I could stalk him on a daily basis.

Nevertheless, I have a resume with over 15-years of computer graphics experience and about 10-years of web designing, so I should be able to expect a decent salary, but it all depends what they really want -- quality or get by cheap and pay the intermediate level guy to keep up. We'll see.

S_Coaster: As pretty as it sounds, I still prefer my three consoles. But.. That's just my preference. I know others will probably flock to this, perhaps even dropping their consoles. Depending on price and game pricing, I may check this out... I do like how the stock controller looks like a 360 pad. However I don't like how the A,B,X,Y buttons are L, I, V, and E... Kinda... gay.

Tim:
Well I wish you great luck then!

well they're probably gonna try and do what every online store dealing with media should do, a subscription based system. flat fee packages, like, 30 bucks u get to play 5 games a month or smt.
