I must say that Avatar and 3D sounds more and more appealing.

I read an article some time back, I don't recall where but generally it attributed this growing investment in new 3d technology by the studios as an attempt to reinvigorate the theater industry.

John stated in another thread that
Quote:
Maybe TVs in the future will enable us to see 3-D as in theaters, I don't know.

This would be great if the industry could pull it off with minimal expense to the consumer. If it involves replacing your hdtv and/or bd player, forget it it'll never fly.

As far as the glasses go perhaps a one time investment for home and theater viewing? John raised a valid point about the comfort of the glasses for those who wear glasses but I think that can be overcome with proper design. Also those of us who wear graded focal length glasses (bifocal, trifocal) might have a problem with objects appearing close from a 3d source. The brain will perceive these as any other physical close object and thus they will have be viewed through the bottom part of the lens. Not good for the neck!

I too am anxiously awaiting Avatar.

I'd settle for anamorphic transfers of Cameron's films on any format at this point.

Yeah it sounds very similar to when the Film industry switched to the Widescreen formats that are common today in order to be different from the television industry.

As long as the 3D is part of the story and not just created for the effect of it.
