Although I'm not as passionate as Chris with regards to the original cast I have to agree with him that they are pretty much irreplaceable. They had some of the best dialogue, relationships, rebuttals, dynamics...I can think of so many other words to use here but I cannot think of the perfect word at the moment...in cinematic (and television) history, not just in the Star Trek franchise.

Some of the conversations between McCoy and Spock were pure joy to watch. Who can forget Scotty and his over analyzations of needing hours to repair something when in reality he knew he could fix it in 10 mins but overstated it to make himself look good (at least that's the way I saw some of the time, and yes some of the time he actually fixed it much quicker than even he thought he could). Then there's the Grand Master himself, Captain James T. Kirk played by William Shatner. It will be VERY difficult to top him to say the least but then again they may not be trying to "top" the original cast, maybe they are just doing a different spin, sort of a different side to these characters which I have nothing against.

Hopefully they bring is the same (or more) joy and entertainment that the original cast brought us for so many years and going by the early reviews, it looks like we have a winner thankfully because it would be a shame if the Star Trek franchise suffered the same fate is my personal favorite franchise...Star Wars which suffered greatly in the prequels and ended up lowering the MAGIC (yes magic) of the original trilogy.

I understand how Chris feels and there was a time in my life that I was that passionate about movies and music. One day I woke up and realized that's just the way art and culture is in America. We are obsessed with recycling old platforms and ideas, and "retro" is the word of the day. It doesn't just stop with movies, look at fashion and rerto-muscle cars (Mustang, Camaro). I'm sure there's some muscle car enthusiasts that think there is no way you can replace the 69 Mustang. Nevertheless, we live in a culture where recreating has become commonplace.

I've always been a huge supporter of original thinking and fresh ideas, but it has long since been an uphill battle and Hollywood is obviously not listening. As mentioned, they are in the business of making profit -- therefore, it's probably less risky to bet on something that worked in the past.

If anything, I think this new Star Trek will probably have some pissed off fans, like Chris, but it will also attract a whole generation of youngsters, and most important, new fans. I know my daughter doesn't get what I see in the old Star Trek shows and movies, and she's only made it halfway through "Wrath of Khan" because she found it boring. However, she's seen the new Star Trek movie previews, and for some reason, it's got her attention. Is it the youthful characters? Is the the cool looking CGI? Is it the cool looking action? To be honest, it's too hard to figure out.

What I think is important is at least with this new retro Trek, I can at least get my daughter to enjoy those experiences with ST, as I had in my youth. If this is what it takes to revitalize the franchise, than so be it.

obviously, i agree with jason and tim, though i also feel that we shouldn't keep dragging chris over the coals. chris is entitled to his opinion, hough it's unfortunate that he may miss out on watching a decent movie (even if it's "not" " star trek").

tim--don't worry, i'm sure that your daughter will make you watch the next "twilight" movie for every episode of TOS that you make her watch.

If I ever have to watch another "Twilight" movie, I'm tying the kid down to the chair and going Clockwork Orange on her ass! That's right, I'll force her damn eyes open, keeping her awake, and go ballistic on a ST marathon!

PS: that's right . . . I'll even make her watch Star Trek V.

How "fresh" is the 'good vs. evil' story? How "fresh" is the 'coming of age' story? How "fresh" is the "love story"? Just change the characters, the settings, but it's the same thing.

However, like you mentioned above, something has to do with nostalgia. However, this doesn't apply to many of us. I grew up watching Dragon Ball, The Simpsons, Thundercats, not Star Trek. Like I've said before, the only recollections I have of Star Trek are the whales, and a couple (yes, very few) episodes that I saw one summer on the reruns at night.

I'm not going to see Star Trek because 'the ol' times', I'm going to watch it because of J.J. Abrams, because of the trailers, but most importantly, because it is a reboot for our times, because I want to see the characters that I loved in Khan, in a movie made in our times, new...in the end, it's another summer movie that we ALL want to watch...

Up to 13 reviews now on RT, and all of them still Fresh! Not one rotten review, so far. I'm sure something has to come in rotten by some time, but in my experience with RT, things are looking pretty good for this flick!

Wait, you mean this Star Trek movie is a prequel??

I could have sworn I read somewhere on this site, posted you you good folks, that this was in fact a sequel. I thought the characters in this current Trek were the offspring of the original cast. Kirk, Jr., Spock, Jr., Uhura Jr., etc.

Man, have I missed something, or what??

I actually think Chris IS Kirk...or Shatner...or are they all one in the same??

Actually though, I can't wait to go see it on opening day. I've been renting the original series slowly over the last couple of years. I only got through the first 2 seasons, but now am starting over with the Blu-ray versions, and will probably watch season 3 when it is released on the format....after re-watching 1 and 2. Gotta say I was pleased with the quality of the Blu-ray so far!!

On another note...I've always liked how Kirk cared and was extremely concerned when he lost a no-name crew member. I thought that made him a better captain!

Season 3 is awful. Consider yourself lucky.
