it's gotten to the point where most companies releasing movies on dvd and blu-ray take care to present movies with high-quality video/audio. substantive extras are no longer criterion's exclusive domain. there is nothing special about criterion...

especially not when garbage like michael bay's movies and "benjamin button" qualify for the "self-important collection".

eddie --- did you mention French and Japaneses movies as well from Criterion? You are right there is nothing exclusive about "C".. most of the extras are interviews anyway.

It may be easy for big releases to get plenty of bonus features, and a good quality transfer/encode, but I can tell you first hand that for foreign films, indie films, and even smaller studio films it can be a fight to get any bonus features at all released on the disc, or anything other than the cheapest, cut-corners transfer/encode.

I still have so many great films that are only available on DVD non-anamorphic with very sub-standard picture quality. I'm still waiting for Criterion to pick up Tuvalu. The film is a masterpiece but nobody else will raise a finger to give it any kind of a decent DVD release, let alone Blu-ray.

just get a multi-region dvd player and buy imports.

Buying imports does not help much. It does nothing for indie films, and because even the overseas versions of the films are often released by smaller distributors the same problems apply.

I have found a few overseas releases of films long before their release here, but I can't recall finding any releases that had better bonus features or PQ than the north american releases.

I know you have a hate on for Criterion because they released Armageddon and Benjamin Button, and while I think it's safe to say we all think that that was stupid, I don't know why you are counting out the rest of the catalog. Show me where Criterion has released a disc that was not significantly better than previous releases of that same film.

Eddie's vendetta against Criterion may well stem from his resentment at the lack of Matt Damon films in their library.

I find it silly to criticize Criterion for what they're not. They don't release a lot of American indie films and have all but ignored Africa and Asia except for Japan. But that's what other studios are for. Criterion sticks to what they're good at and in recent years they've expanded their horizons somewhat with some B-horror films and avant garde cinema.

It would be great to have an equally well-funded label putting out African and Asian films, but I'm not going to criticize Criterion for not being the ones to do it. Their are thousands of great films that need a good DVD release - they put out about 4 a month. I don't expect them to get to everything.
