Glad Im not the only one annoyed by close-up shaky cam technique. Although I generally liked the movie, this type of cinematography during the action scenes greatly reduced my enjoyment of the film...

Im hoping the whole quick cutting, close-up shaky-cam technique is just a trend and disappears or nearly disapppears within the next few years.

I think its a trend kind of like zoom lenses or diffused photography in the 70's, or repeat action cutting in the 80's and its overuse will lessen as did these other annoying or distracting "cheap" cinematic techniques...

Damn you, "Bourne Identity" series for starting this trend. Although Michael Bay may be the first to really get this going in the 90's, at least he changes it up with various other techniques.

Shaky Cam doesn't bug me all that much. It's just a style and I really don't feel it was overused. It could be worse, they could have a still camera and then have all the actors shake around to give the appearance of turbulent action. I actually saw this happen in a very bad B movie called "The Terminators", at a friends house. The actors were in the back of a van literally bouncing and shaking around to appear like it was a rough ride. You could tell it was so freaking fake! Therefore, if the shaky cam makes things feel more intense and real, then I'll learn to live with it.

Tim...let's be honest comrade, we thought we were going to be treated to Terminator Salvation, but no, it was something else, 'Terminators'

How could you not be bothered by the shaky cam? The flare thing was actually realistic, but the shaky? I mean, you stage all these nice expensive things so that you can see them shaky? No, it was just a bad choice from the director that I can't overlook (either way, remember, perfection is unattainable)...I hope they don't abuse it on the next movie...

I guess it comes down to preference, or indifference towards shaky cam. For me it nearly ruins movies, but unfortunately I think the masses dont really care, as I think not many are aware of things like editing, camera moves and composition, but more concerned with more obvious matters like dialogue and plot, and wether or not there were enough explosions and fight scenes. When I compare the beautifully choreographed and shot action scenes with the likes of recent releases like Dark Knight and Iron Man and how they thrilled with their various uses of different cinematic techniques, it makes me wonder just how great Star Trek could have been.

A good film all around though... At least it was entertaining and funny...

I care more about the dialogue plot and whatnot, but Star Trek didn't feel as 'cinematic' as it should have, these past years cinema has lost it's 'looking' glamour, the framing, the shots...I can't remember a truly memorable shot from any movie in this past year, but maybe I'm wrong and it's me, that I tend to have this 'old school' thoughts... hopefully they'll fix it on the next movie.

So Paramount had Iron Man last year, Star Trek this year, and Iron Man 2 next year...would that mean Star Trek 12 in 2011?

^ Along with Transformers 3 and possibly GI Joe 2.

If they stick to an every other year schedule. Frankly, they'd be idiots to do that. You should spread the wealth around a bit.

LOL!!!

My friend, Dominic, let's just say he's not good with picking out decent movies at his local Hollywood Video. When he told me he had "Terminators" I was a bit perplexed because I had not heard of it. Nevertheless, it was some cheese-ball B movie with a bunch of Terminators!

"Hollywood has lost its Looking Glamour." Haven't heard it put that way before but makes sense. Seems to have been replaced with perceived "grit," "intensity," or the all so important "realism," at the expenses of cinematic artistry...

Now granted, imagery like the star destroyer in the opening shot of Star Wars ep.4 cruising above us, or the shot of the children with E.T. in silouhuette flying past the moon do not come every day, but I think its slightly unfair to infer that Hollywood has completely lost its cinematic flair. The likes of IronMan, Dark Knight, & even Transformers to a degree appeal to my more classical or "old school" sensibilities when it comes to cinematic filmmaking. But Abrams STAR TREK was definately missing the awesome cinematics I so crave.

The guy that really knows how to balance realism/grit with intense and beautiful cinematics is James Cameron. He is a true master, and you can bet your ass his upcoming films "Avatar," and "Battle Angel," will not be a constant stream of annoying shaky hand held cameras in close-up to the point of mushy geography and nearly impressionistic blurs passing as excuses for action scenes.
