Ok if you didn't see the movie, this is your only warning, I really want to discuss some of the major plot points, please stop reading if you don't want to know anything.....

Ok, first of all I loved this movie! This movie ranks up there with Wrath of Khan and First Contact (my favorite Trek movies up until now) despite this I still have a few concerns with the weak plot.

First of all, I can't believe they blew up Vulcan! Star Trek has not been known for such apocalyptic storylines, so I was a little dismayed that this occurred. Really this is my biggest beef with the movie.

I also want to ask the writers to STOP with the TIME TRAVEL! C'mon Star Trek movies now have more time travel than the Back to the Future trilogy.
Can't the writers come up with something more imaginative?

Also maybe someone can clarify this, at the very end when Nero's ship got caught up in the 'black hole' weren't they still hanging around Earth's orbit when this occurred? Wouldn't forming a black hole in our solar system be a very bad thing?

#1: it gives the movie a sense of scale none of the others had. #2: it made Nero a seeming bad ass instead of just a dope.

Not for this movie. It was necessary to remove the 40+ years of continuity and restart the franchise. Next movie? Absolutely.

I thought Spock Prime's ship warped away from Earth after destroying the drill. Nero and the Narada followed. Enterprise showed up in the nick of time to protect Quinto Spock. I don't know how far from Earth they were, but I assume not in the solar system anymore.

Thanks Jason, appreciate the feedback! Like I said, this was a great movie and I can always look past some of the minor stuff.

I'd love to see a special BD edition with some extended scenes, maybe they cut out a lot of stuff... who knows?

Apparently, there is a good deal of Spock/Amanda stuff that didn't make the final film.

One feature I REALLY want on there is a PiP track which points out all the mentions to previous shows and episodes. Maybe even a tiny clip which shows what is being referenced, too.

Actually, the next movie probably will involve more time travel. Most likely, Vulcan will be reseructed. And, seeing that this story line started in the future, in the Next Generation years, you might see some of those guys appear. There are so many interesting possibilities when you deal with timelines.

I was under the impression that not only time travel was apparent, but also that the past itself is a whole different dimension. A parallel universe, so to speak. Therefore, Vulcan would still exist in old Spock's, parallel universe.

If anything, they did it just so they could clean the slate and do whatever they wanted with the characters. For example, this Kirk my never run into Khan or tribbles in this past parallel universe.

Nevertheless, as I have mentioned about the underlying plot, it just acts as a backdrop to graduate the crew into their right places. However, they have created a universe that could have a complete different destiny than their old self's in the future universe. I do grow tired of Sci-fi writers always going this route and it's the only thing about the movie that is extremely cliche. But I do understand why they did it in this case. Now JJ Abrams and writers can do whatever they want within their own Star Trek universe. As we all know, that can turn into either a good or bad thing.

In any case, I can't think of a film I've seen twice in the same weekend -- it's been far too many years to remember.

I concur. It would be like the mirror universe: events happen in both using the same people, but not canceling the other out.

I don't see movie #2 using time travel precisely because it's been done now. I see something coming no one is going to expect. Maybe an encounter with the Borg, maybe a brand new race, maybe the Romulan War...who knows? But whatever happens it will be completely in this new universe.

I think I read an article on G4tv.com (sorry don't have link) arguing that the next movie would be perfect to bring back Khan and redo the whole "Space Seed" storyline. Not sure if I completely agree with that one, but maybe if they come up with a good script...

Exactly, and you do get a huge clue to that in the ice cave with Spock. Spock tells young Kirk that Kirk's father was his inspiration for joining Star Fleet and that his father attended his graduation -- yet we all know in this parallel universe that Kirk's father died when Kirk was born. Therefore, you could have the same peeps in the parallel universe, but when they die or who they meet could be totally different. As Spock would say, "Fascinating".

Like you said, they needed to do this in order to have a clean slate, and not be tied to things happening a certain way (looking at you Star Wars prequels)...which means they can do whatever they want (which usually is a good thing)...
