So, I hear that these bad boys are not living up to their potential in terms of picture quality. There's a quick write up over at "the digital bits" confirming this after many people wrote in there and asked about the rumors.

I guess I'll be waiting until the "director's cuts/extended editions" are released...whenever that will be.

Paramount have not yet sent out the review copies of the BD "Star Trek" movies, but the rumors being reported are probably based on the European editions, which should be the same. From what I hear, the first couple of the six movies look great, but the video engineers may have been a bit overzealous in their use of DNR filtering on several of the later films, wiping out detail. We'll see.

I'll tell you in a couple of days.

I believe the reviewer contacted Paramount personally and informed them of the "talk" and they did something he was grateful for. They sent him some "check discs" (whatever that means) of all 6 films for him to review.

Check out the link....don't know if the final product will be different or not.

there'll always be people whining about this or that. take a look at the two-disc dvds if you have them. all of them--even the "TNG" movies--have print damage and out-of-control mosquito noise. it's apparent that these new blu-ray versions are huge improvements over the dvds. as long as the movies weren't mutilated to the extent that "patton" was, i think we can all live with these blu-rays.

Several reviews on amazon of the German releases state that only the second looks good.

I have the digitaly remastered Star Trek movies on dvd and although they look nice I don't think they used the kind of quality filmstock that other directors at the time used. Very doubtful that the Blus are much better. I say this only because my Original Star Wars Trilogy on dvd remastered looks much better than the ST dvds. Anyone else notice this?

That review affirms my fears. They are not all that great in video quality even though better than the SD DVDs. The kirk films do have an old look(the reviewer hit it on the nail). There really isn't an excuse for this because I watched 2001(1968) and it had the clarity of new movies. Is it because they didn't have the budget for higher quality film stock and special affects like the Star Wars movies?
