After last weekend's $76.5 million opening, three phrases keep getting tossed in the direction of "Star Trek" director J.J. Abrams: sequel, Khan, and William Shatner.

On Friday, as the filmmaker hoped to maintain momentum heading into his second weekend, Abrams told MTV News that he's open to all three.

"The fun of this [new alternate 'Trek' reality] is that the destiny of these characters is in their hands — it's not constrained by the pre-existing films or TV series," the "Lost" mastermind explained. "Believe me, whether it's William Shatner or Khan ... it would be ridiculous to not be open to those ideas."

"One of the reasons we wanted to break with the original 'Star Trek' timeline was it felt restrictive," Abrams said of the plot device that could conceivably fuel the venerable series for another five decades. "The idea, now that we are in an independent timeline, allows us to use any of the ingredients from the past — or come up with brand-new ones — to make potential stories."

Sounds like Star Trek "canon" is out the door.

Well, it was obvious after seeing the movie that JJ and team easily cleaned the slate. While I do tire of the whole "time-travel/parallel dimension" thing, I also believe it was a clever idea for keeping the franchise fresh.

It will certainly be interesting to see what happens, but I think I'd hold off on the "khan" thing until the very last. It would be nice to see them "close" with the Khan idea for their last film with the new actors -- then we could tie all the films together in a unique kind of way, even though they exist in other dimensions.

Well, that's my take on it. And besides, JJ and team have tons of great Star Trek stories from the old days they could put out.

No problem, as long as they don't bring back Q! God, I couldn't stand that guy.

Or this guy:

Yeah, but the other angle I'm thinking about is JJ and team not only opened up for alternate plots, they also opened the doors for other creative teams and directors to take over, as long as it plays within JJ's parallel dimension. Could you imagine Spielberg or Guillermo del Toro doing a Star Trek movie? Well, with what Abrams and his creative team came up with, anyone could take the helm as long as it played within the constraints of the newly created world. Therefore, "style" is the only thing that could possibly change or alter. Pretty damn clever when you really sit and think about it.

Nevertheless, it will be exciting to see where all this will go!

I would rather see them do a "Star Wars" movie! (or maybe 3 with Abrams on board too!) Could you imagine, Spielberg does the first one, del Toro #2, and then Abrams sets a proper stage with #3 for future episodes)

Blades . . . you're a man after my heart! lol

I would actually love to see that combo happen. I'm open to anything and that's exactly what Abrams and team threw upon the table. It's an open field whether a different time-line or creative players. As I said, it will be interesting to see what happens.

YOUR heart!? I am currently constructing my very own ol' georgey voodoo doll! And considering how much money ive given the sack..it just may very well work...

The dude needs to sign over the rights. It certainly could'nt get any worse than what HE did to his own legacy, (and OUR souls) and he still continues to do it to this day with The Clone Wars!

I thank him dearly for his creation, however he must also be cursed for f888ing it up. He needs to Skywalk the hell outta here. Ofcoarse this will never happen because he is in his own little world not unlike the freak of pop.

Ok...now back to Star Trek.

And, Steve, don't forget the big one: "The Hobbit," tentatively scheduled for 2012.
