Star Trek director J.J. Abrams tells TV Guide that he will be producing the fourth "Mission: Impossible" film.

"I am incredibly honored that Tom has invited me back as a producer on 'Mission: Impossible 4,'" said Abrams, who directed 2006's Mission: Impossible III, but hasn't yet committed to directing the fourth.

"Tom and I have come up with a really cool idea we are pursuing," he added.

I was just talking about how much I hated the mission impossible movies last night. As movies they are ok. But I don't like the way they killed off all the original characters. Why call it mission impossible and not just come up with something else?

I'm actually watching III right now. It was the best one, so I hope 4 will top it.

I have to say... the first and third ones are the best. I've been slowly accumulating the trilogy each trip to Wal-Mart. Just completed it. May have to have a Mission Impossible-Athon soon.

I tried watching MI2 a while back but the repeat shots of the same action from different angles was such a turnoff and distracting that I couldn't bare it. I think I made it through half the movie.

I don't know, I didn't have the issues everyone else had with MI2. To me it was just a simple, summer popcorn flick that worked for the moment. By no means was it anything great, but it really never had to be. The only thing I would tarnish it for is it came across, not as a director being self-indulgent, but a self-indulgence of Tom Cruise. I mean, it was almost like Tom Cruise Porn, if you get what I mean.

I Agree with you 100%. John Woo's chain-cutting is really getting on my nerves as well. My worst example would be the boat jump in "face /off", there's something like 9 angles in there in slow-mo.

As for JJ and MI:4: I really didn't like MI:3 to begin with, i found the "True Lies" nuances in there very distracting, Philip Seymour Hoffman was wasted on a villain with no panache and the secondaries surrounding tommy cartoon-flat.

I guess tom cruise needs a vehicle to storm your local multiplex again since "Valkyrie" did poor business and got mediocre reviews (i seriously liked Valkyrie).

But according to Wikipedia, the film cost $75 million to produce, and has grossed $200 million worldwide, not counting home video sales, PPV, etc... which is hardly "poor" business.

Compare that to the apparent stinker of Will Farrell's latest, "Land of the Lost". The film cost well over $100 million, and has only grossed $22 million to date, and is dropping fast - a MAJOR box office bomb! Universal is going to LO$E big on this film.

As for MI2 (and the whole Trilogy), I enjoyed 'em... MI2 only suffers with the too-repeated use [as seen in the first movie] of the false-face impersonation/makeup effect... now THAT got old quick. But MI2's action, editing, sound and photography were great (similar to Woo's FACE OFF).
