I disagree. There's a ton of fake shots within all the first three films. For example, let's not forget in Temple of Doom with the entire scene of the plane crash and them hurdling down a mountain side escaping imminent death. That entire scene alone was 70's fake. Within that same movie the entire last 30 minutes looks as fake as Michael Jackson's plastic nose job. As fun as it was watching a Thunder Mountain chase in the caves, well, go back and take a second glance - those effects were horrid!

Then there's Raiders - we may have thought that ending looked pretty cool back in the day, but today it looks no better than cheap, clay animation (they tried this effect again in TLC, but it still looked clay-ish, so to speak). Before the release of the DVD's a few years ago, when Indy was thrown into the pit of snakes and he's face to face with that Cobra, you could literally see the reflection of the snake on the glass between Indy and the Cobra - they did manage to fix that problem on the DVD release.

Within each film there are plenty of shots where you can tell the backdrops are just giant paintings of scenery. Therefore, I disagree with centering out IJ4 for having some visual effects issues. IMO, all the IJ films share that issue. Personally, I thought they did a pretty good job with IJ4. If that jungle was all CGI, than IMO it looked very well done. The only scene I would take issues with in IJ4 is the very last scene with the saucer coming out of the ground - that could have been a little better.

Nevertheless, pointing a finger at special effects flaws in any of these films is kind of pointless. Spielberg and Lucas had the intentions of making a series themed off of old Saturday Matinees of the 40's and 50's. Therefore, if some of the visuals come across as a bit cheesy and campy, they were probably done that way on purpose just to capture the feel of those old Matinee films of yesteryear. Besides, I've never felt the effects were such an important issue in any of the IJ movies. What's important are the characters that we've grown to admire and all the fun adventure, which I don't think they have failed to do with any of the IJ films.

I actually thought Temple of Doom was probably the fakest looking of the four movies. The "Temple" looks like a poorly made set for a Indiana Jones stunt show. I don't know if it was the lighting but you can just see how fake the walls are and that it's clearly not a real cavern.

All in all though I enjoyed Indy 4. Was it the best one In my opinion? No, but I enjoyed more then Temple of Doom and it wasn't nearly the trainwreck that the Phantom Menace was.

give this man a ciiiiiiiiGAR! we all know that steve and georgey can DO special effects. infact i believe they invented them. the "cheezeyness" of these movies are indeed intentional and meant to provoke an era of which many of us missed.

i say BRING ON indy 5 &6! i liked kotcs.

The script? Huh? No, I don't think the script was any more of a failure than Temple of Doom, which I thought is the worst of all four. They had to work with what they could, plus deal with trying their best to satisfy the most die-hard fans. I think they did pretty good considering what they were up against. Sorry, I disagree with you on that one Coaster.

While I agree that the movie was entertaining it had way less actual stunts in it. I think they could have done much better when compared to modern movies like James Bonds and Batmans(with Bale). I bought Indy 4 because I am a die hard fan. When my brother came over to watch he said he liked it but it was a "Cartoon Indy" which is too true. Yes the sets were cheaper in the old movies but they looked real where the environments in the new movie are totaly fake. Nevertheless I'm looking forward to the next installment. I just hope they let the scenery be real and add in affects where they have too. Lucas is a special affects whore these days just because he can be. When I watch a movie like Transformers which has massive amounts of special affects I never even get the cheap fake affect feeling once whereas I get that feeling the whole way thru Indy 4. The only scenes that looked good to me were where they got chased on the motorcycle and where they found the chrystal skull. Maybe the next movie will feature a CGI Harrison Ford, lol
