I'm a little disappointed that my ONKYO does not matrix a 5.1 to a 7.1 track. Now that I have my entire HT system geared to 7.1, when I watch a 5.1 DD or TrueHD or dts core the rears don't work just the sides. Should I be telling my PS3 to do something or my ONKYO? John, blade, ReggieP, or anybody what am I doing wrong?

I believe Dolby (Prol logic is it?) IIx will do what you want. If you don't have that, them I'm not sure.

doesn't matrixing sometimes yield muddy results? i remember reading that if you matrix "saving private ryan", the surround channels just collapse to one speaker in the rear (definitely not good, lol).

My Onkyo is older, but if it is doing the decoding, such as DD, than I can make the receiver matrix to the back rears. Since my Blu-ray decodes the Blu-Ray movies audio, my receiver does not allow me to overide the 5.1. I can live with that since I figure it sounds better in HD audio anyway. For all standard DVDs, I have my receiver decode and the rears are always on.

I use the 7.1 analog cables for Blu-Ray and Coaxial for standard. Under the 7.1 multichannel audio, it won't allow the overide. Maybe you can try the optical or coaxial for non-HD movies and at least add the rears that way, and if your receiver can decode the HD audio, switch to the receiver and see if an overide is possible.

The Onkyo should allow you to use PLIIx with native 5.1 DD signals. It simply separates the poles for you corresponding rear channels. I use it quite frequently. I'm using HDMI for both Video and Audio through the reciever, and I have no Issues. Falcon is right. As long as both backs and sides are programmed it should allow you to select PLIIx. If it doesn't you may have the speakers set to large configuration. Changing it to small should overcome this problem. I always say, have you checked the manual? LOL jsut teasing, most guys don't read manuals!

Tony,

Sorry, I just saw your post. Yes, Reaggie is correct. If you set your receiver to "Pro Logic IIx" in the "Movie" mode, the receiver will matrix a 5.1 signal to the back speakers (and the side surrounds will function as usual), giving you a simulated 7.1 effect. Just use your receiver's "Surround" mode (easiest from the receiver's remote, the button labeled "Surround") to navigate to "PLIIx, Movie," and listen to your back speakers light up.

Remember, then, for 7.1 matrix simulation from a 5.1 source (including regular Dolby Digital and DTS or Dolby TrueHD and DTS-Master Audio), use PLIIx in the Movie mode.

Then, depending on your receiver or amplifier, there may be also be DTS and THX simulted 7.1 surround modes that also apply to 5.1 inputs. Consult your manual, or just scroll through the available options from the "Surround" button on your remote and listen to the results in the back speakers.
