Worlds dumbest companies, and people still buy in.

1) Sony
2) General Motors
3) Chrysler

You know, John does make some very valid points. The studios have sunk way too much into the BDA and are not about to just walk away because things got off to a rocky start. Tough economy or not, Sony made their bed and now they have to lay in it.

And the complaint about the movies WB is releasing . . . look guys, 90% of films out there are crap or just mediocre. I don't care what is posted for release any given year, you are always going to get a crap load of movies that entirely suck. Nevertheless, there are tons of average Joe's that feel it is important to have "Big Momma's House" in hi-def.

The amazing thing is, that some of the people who are commenting negatively about Blu Ray, are the same people who support UPCONVERTED technology. Now you want to talk about a scam, well UPCONVERTED technology set the standard.
Let's see, Wal Mart had a Magnavox Blu Ray player before fathers day for $124.99, hmmm sounds pretty reasonable to me. I know it is not a profile 2.0, but when you put the movie in, it is displayed on the FLIPITY BOX in front of you. I mean people are still buying VCR/DVD combo players that are more than that. And you did see my rant about the prices of the movies, so all in all the prices have come down. Bottom line, you have some SONY / Blu Ray haters out there. And we all have to deal with it. Blu Ray will be around for awhile and the haters will have to "Build A Bridge" and get over it.

Peace Love and Hapiness !!!!!

Sorry I should have been more elaborate with my comment. I have an Optoma H30 480p projector (but displays HD amazingly well through component cables alot better than some LCDs and Plasmas) I have been using an HD DVD player on it with awesome results. I would like to own a BD player but the price is too high right now for me. I would also like to Upgrade to an HD projector one day. In my case it would probably be better to go HD projector and BD player at the same time. But your right people shouldn't waste an HDTV set on SD.

You can get a great Panasonic player at Costco for $230, a Sharp for $199, and a Funai clone for even less

Welcome to BD prices in Canada

"I think they may be John. For the most part we all want better picture and sound, but at our own price, Not on Sony's terms. This is part fo the problem when you have a group like the BDA. Inconsistent, and unorganized crap at the consumers expense. "

I totally agree with this statement. I think people misread my comments or jump too quickly to conclusions about my posts. Mr. Puccio asked a valid question. The answer is "no", of course I don't think upconverted SD is as good as Blue Ray........... not in picture quality, not in sound quality. But, and this is a big but, when the price of a back catalog title like "Dead Calm" is released at $28.99, my remastered SD version I picked up a few years ago for $5 is "good enough". Again, it is a "pricing" issue with me, and, as I stated previously in another thread, the seating distance my room layout allows of 10 feet for a 50" monitor. I have a large collection of SD DVD movies and concerts, somewhere in the neighborhood of 900 now. I have gone to great pains to squeeze every last bit of picture quality out of them with my player and plasma. I really did want one hi def format to replace SD DVD as the standard, and now that BD is the sole survivor, I wish that would still happen. I just have my doubts, as others have posted, that Sony has missed the window to make that a reality with the general public, and as long as prices stay as high as they are, that probably won't change. "If" it never gets past a niche status, I hope that doesn't effect the release of all the great back catalog titles that should be available on BD. I guess time will tell. When pricing gets a little more acceptable, and I eventually reconfigure my room to accomodate a 60 or 65" monitor, I will add BD to my setup. I just can't justify it at this time, and not because I think my upconverted SD is as good :-)

You can't justify buying into Blu-ray until you have a 65" HDTV? So, let me get this right, you'll blow the money for a 65" set, usually over 3k to 4k for that size, but refuse to get into Blu-ray at under $200? Ok, can someone here justify the "common sense" in this?

Look, many of us here have pointed out countless ways to get into Blu-ray at easily affordable costs. Eddie suggested the Funai's which have the best price going for a player. Myself and many others have suggested buying used copies of Blu-rays on Amazon you can't fail since they are scratch resistant coated. I'd say 80% of the Blu-rays I own I paid under $12 for buying used through Amazon. And yes, $12 beats the hell out of any retail chain out there and I've never had playback issues. And Walmart? Are you kidding!? Never buy Blu-rays in Walmart they're worse than Best Buy when it comes to price. Always buy used on Amazon and you'll never bitch about disc prices again.

Good advice Tim. Also, don't forget craigslist. You can buy/trade used blurays on there for cheaper than the big box retailers.

100% agree with Tim, blu ray prices are not so bad if you know where to shop. If you are only shopping for your movies at Wal-Mart, then of course BDs seem expensive.
