You can't justify buying into Blu-ray until you have a 65" HDTV? So, let me get this right, you'll blow the money for a 65" set, usually over 3k to 4k for that size, but refuse to get into Blu-ray at under $200? Ok, can someone here justify the "common sense" in this?

That's not what I'm saying. Jeez, It's the price of the Discs and the fact I am sitting 10 feet from my 50" set. The improvement in picture at that distance , IMO, isn't worth the additional expense at this point. Now when I eventually upgrade to a larger display, the picture improvement will be much more noticable at the same seating distance. And as far as the post suggesting I save money and get them cheap on Craiglist, now thats just what I want to do. If I'm gonna by a DVD, either format, I want to pick it up at my local BB or order through Amazon.

Not to be too personal (and sorry about changing the subject), but is there a reason you can't sit closer to the set now? With a 50" screen, the recommended sitting position would be 75-87", and you say you're sitting 120" away. Is it not possible to move the TV closer to the couch or the couch closer to the TV or a combination of both?

Sitting a little closer to the set is the cheapest way to see improvements in any high-def picture. I mean, it costs nothing.

I just got back from Wal-Mart. Guess what I found? One of the NB500MGXs that were made specifically for the Father's Day sale price of $128. It is identical to the NB530MGX being sold for $168. I bought it right away as a present for my gf's brother.

There were many titles that were 2-for-$20. These are big studio movies such as "Mission: Impossible" 1 & 2, "Top Gun", "We Were Soldiers", Jack Ryan series, etc. Wal-Mart is also carrying many Lionsgate titles for $10 (or 2-for-$20). Those of you complaining about prices don't seem to realize that Blu-ray prices are falling faster than DVD prices did.

Remember the first James Bond DVDs? MSRP for those was $35!!! You can now get "Casino Royale" 2-disc Blu-ray for $15 new at most places.

This weekend, John, Tim, and I will visit all the naysayers' homes and confiscate your HDTVs.

Not too personal at all John, great angle on this. I just appreciate that you do understand the whole "screen size/seating distance versus the gains BD brings to the table. The way the room is configured, love seats off to the side get a little closer, but puts you at an angle. I have been seriously thinking (don't laugh) of getting a nice bean bag chair to sit on the floor and get into the "zone" you describe. After doing that, will have to start looking at some BD options.

antennahead,

Is your user name some kind of homage to "Radiohead"?

Have any of us asked, but is your TV 720p or 1080p? I ask because it might explain your distance requirements. I have a 50" 1080p and from five-feet the picture looks awesome. I do seem to recall that older 720p sets required a farther sitting distance in order to get a good picture. I could be wrong, though.

John, you may be married, so you may not have the final say on the configuration of the room. I can appreciate that. Fortunately, in my case the Wife-O-Meter is very supportive of whatever I think I need to do to get the best picture and/or sound from our home theater and our music-listening room. We actually bought our present house about twenty years ago because of the vaulted ceiling in the living room, perfect for stereo music listening.

Anyway, I have a very small home-theater room, but still we have the couch out about a foot or two from the back wall (in order for the rear speakers above and behind us to have some room to work, with side/surround speakers on the adjacent walls), and the TV is on a stand about two feet from the front wall (in order for us to get the right viewing distance). Does it look good from an interior-decor standpoint? Probably not. But it gives us great picture and sound.

Actually it's a song by ZZTOP from the early '90's, about a boy, teenager that is a musician and soaks up all things music and everything he hears like a sponge. I play guitar, as was a lot like that in my youth, so I adopted the name as my internet persona many years ago. The plasma is a Pioneer Kuro 1080P.

To answer Mr. Puccio's question. I think the short term answer is to buy the bean bag chair ( it's actually pretty nice, expensive vinyl lol), and move up to about 6 feet from the screen. This will work until I decide to bite the bullet, get a larger monitor, and reconfigure the audio setup. I was going to post picks. but not sure how. I see the IMG button, but once that is on the screen, looks like it wants a URL addy.

antennahead: yeah, you need to post a URL between the IMG brackets.

i was just at best buy, where several warner blus were being sold for $15 and $10. many titles were also $17.

i bought "dirty harry" for $15 and "space cowboys" for $10. (Y)

I just bought the Blu-ray of "National Treasure 2" (don't laugh, I kinda like this series) for $8.25 used on Amazon. I buy most all of my BDs used (the ones I don't get from the studio). Can't beat the prices, most are actually new or played once, and I've never gotten a bad disc.

John

PS: John, you have a 50" Pioneer Kuro, and you're getting something bigger? You know, if you go bigger, it would have to be a Kuro 60" to get a picture better (well, bigger, anyway) than you have now. The Kuros produce the best picture available. I think you have the best thing in the world right now. You just have to start feeding it BD material and sit on that bean bag. I assume you also have a 7.1 surround system? If not, that would be my own next move rather than a bigger screen.

Also, nobody calls me "Mr. Puccio" anymore except people trying to sell me stuff on the telephone. It's just "John." Thanks.
