What about:

2001
Serenity
Robocop
Wall-E
Planet of the Apes
Hellboy
Superman II
Artificial Intelligence
Children of Men
E.T.
Ghostbusters
The Iron Giant
Jurassic Park
and many more...

The term sci-fi is very broad, to do this list is extremely difficult. I wish there was another type of criteria for it.

In my opinion, from your list...

2001 - scifi/fantasy
Serenity - scifi/fantasy
Robocop - action/adventure
Wall-E - Family
Planet of the Apes - scifi/fantasy
Hellboy - action/adventure
Superman II - action/adventure
Artificial Intelligence - scifi/fantasy
Children of Men - action/adventure
E.T. - scifi/fantasy
Ghostbusters - geez, this could be both and so could E.T.
The Iron Giant - action/adventure
Jurassic Park - action/adventure
and many more...

You're right though, it's a very broad spectrum and so many movies could be included.

P.S. Thats just my opinion and I realize that most of those movies could fit in other categories also.

Actually, it shouldn't be broad at all. It's just that the general public has for a long time now confused science fiction (fiction, made-up stories, based on real science) with fantasy (where anything goes, according the rules set down by the author). If we defined "science fiction" more narrowly, in its original sense, we could eliminate a lot of the fanstasy pictures mentioned, like "Hellboy."

Anyway, strictly for traditional sci-fi, I'd go for "2001," "Contact," "2010," "Close Encounters," things like that.

literary fantasy involving the imagined impact of science on society

Quote:
Science fiction differs from fantasy in that, within the context of the story, its imaginary elements are largely possible within scientifically established or scientifically postulated laws of nature (though some elements in a story might still be pure imaginative speculation). Exploring the consequences of such differences is the traditional purpose of science fiction, making it a "literature of ideas". Science fiction is largely based on writing entertainingly and rationally about alternate possibilities in settings that are contrary to known reality.

These may include:

* A setting in the future, in alternative time lines, or in a historical past that contradicts known facts of history or the archeological record
* A setting in outer space, on other worlds, or involving aliens
* Stories that involve technology or scientific principles that contradict known laws of nature
* Stories that involve discovery or application of new scientific principles, such as time travel or psionics, or new technology, such as nanotechnology, faster-than-light travel or robots, or of new and different political or social systems (e.g., a dystopia, or a situation where organized society has collapsed)
-Wikipedia

Hellboy can fit on the 'universe travel' thing...and how things can come from outer space...

John, it is difficult to distinguish from 'fantasy' films, specially if you consider the definitions above.

EDIT: Wall-E has robots...Superman has time travel...Iron Giant has robots from outer space...Jurassic Park genetics cloning stuff...all sci fi.

Well put, John. When I think of science fiction I think of a few classics which influenced my tastes and stroked my imagination when I was a kid. My favorites:

Forbidden Planet - blew me away when it came out!
This Island Earth - also blew me away big time.
When World's Collide - showcasing the new technology of the time.
The Creature From the Black Lagoon - in 3d!
Earth vs the Flying Saucers
War of the Worlds
The Day the Earth Stood Still - I loved the bd of the 51 film.
First Man On Venus - a Russian flick.
The Blob - 57 version.
Invaders from Mars
Dr. Who from way back - tv
The old b&W serials - Radar Men from the Moon influenced the later Rocketman
Space Cadet - early tv
Space Patrol - early tv
X Minus One - radio series. You can get all the .mps from earthstation.com. Just close your eyes and use your imagination.
John Carter of Mars books by Edgar Rice Boroughs - I'd love to see a film based on those. I own a couple of early edition books.

And a zillion others. Don't misunderstand me I love the new stuff on BD, but they are ... different...
