sorry Tim. I don't watch movies in theaters anymore. The only movie I watched in a theater in the last 18 months is "The Dark Knight".

Well, between cell phones and other distractions in movie theatres, I don't blame you.

Just caught this one last weekend.

I liked it about as much as John did. Sound in the theater was horrible (this is one of the main reasons why I don't go to the theater as much anymore). Still love Mann's sense for music in his films. For me, he evokes a strong response with his knack for picking the right music, or at least hiring someone to pick the right music for him.

The digital photography didn't bother me as much as the Bourne-style guerilla handheld style pulled me out of the period. Not that it necessarily should have, but I guess I have associated that style of filming with more modern material.

I'd suggest it, and I know I'll grab it on DVD when it comes out.

Sean (...unless it grabs me first...)

iMDB Lists the following cameras used for Public Enemies:

Arriflex 235, Cooke S4 Lenses
Arriflex 435, Cooke S4 Lenses
Sony CineAlta F23, Zeiss DigiPrime and Fujinon Lenses
Sony HDC-F950, Zeiss DigiPrime and Fujinon Lenses
Sony PMW-EX1

It seems a bit weird for me for a DoP to choose digital in a dark period film and from what i'm reading here, use hand held all over the place while people shoot with tommy-guns.

The entire HD look worked well with with Collateral, i thought it fitted the story, i found miami-vice not working, although a contemporary and gritty story, the HD feel pushed me out. Ill have to wait and watch this one to judge properly i suppose.
