After years of contentedly building my SD DVD collection, I'm finally ready to enter the world of Blu Ray. I am looking forward to adding BDs, but don't want to lose use of my 100 or so standard DVD movies. Can anyone recommend a good Blu Ray player with "backward capability" that will allow me to watch both BD and SD Discs ( - if possible, under $300 )? Thanks!

Take a look here:

I highly recommend the Panasonic DMP-BD60 Blu-ray Disc Player - you can get it right now for just $199 on amazon.com.

You can also get the Panasonic BD 35 (essentially the same as the BD 60) used for cheaper. Either one of them will give you great picture and sound on both bluray and DVD.

By the way, I believe ALL bluray players can play regular DVD's.

This is a good basic unit that several members bought last year during a special promotion at Amazon.com. Basically, if you bought the player with four movies, you got $100 off, effectively making the purchase price only $100 for the player. I would guess that Amazon.com will have similar deals again this year (between Sept and Dec).

If you want to go dirt cheap, try hunting for the Magnavox NB500MGX at Wal-mart, which is only $128. Be careful, though, as Wal-mart also carries the Magnavox NB530MGX, which is $168.

btw, the early samsungs and sonys didn't play cds, and some would stretch non-anamorphic dvds, so people looked short and fat.
