I just saw at least 50 Magnavox Blu-ray players being sold at Wal-Mart for $98. This is the lowest price ever for new-in-the-box Blu-ray players without strings attached (i.e. you don't have to buy anything else to get the price). Both NB500MGX and NB530MGX models are being sold at this price.

These are second-gen Funai clones with the same basic specs, operating system, and remote controls as the first-gens. I bought one a couple of weeks ago for my gf's dad, and it works great.

Is this awesome..or another sign that walmart MAY be throwing in the towel? As already mentioned by somebody else on a different thread and witnessed first hand here in oh...the bd aisle is SHRINKING. Still..this is the price point everybody wanted. I would have to assume "do or die"...

bladerunner... it's common business knowledge that Walmart is all about price control, and the constant pressure to get lower prices from their suppliers, so that they can then lower their retail prices, so as to keep customers buying from THEM instead of their competition.

I read a report yesterday in the newspaper, that retail sales are much lower these days... except at Walmart, as they are holding their own, and even having record revenue/sales at various locations.

So... Walmart lowers prices to produce even more sales revenue... and not because they are "throwing in the towel" (or similar) with a particular line of business (Blu-ray, etc).

Honestly our Wal-Mart BD selection is growing. They have an endcap dedicated to new and hot releases, aswell as one section of an aisle dedicated to Blu-Ray. They also have about 3-4 players, including some 500 dollar Home Theater set up that comes with the BD player, and 7.1 Surround sound system. I'm not sure what brand it was though.

I was at a Walmart here in Toronto a couple of nights ago and went to check out the bluray section. Every movie was around $30 and above. I was super confused and just walked away. Then, hidden on one of the end-aisles I see some blurays, $10 each. Granted they were the older Lionsgate titles that you see on sale everywhere for cheap but still, there were some decent flicks. I ended up picking up The Ultimate Avengers, Stargate, Reservoir Dogs, and Lord of War for $10 each. Score.

Not to change the subject, but I can also confirm the first Panasonic BD player for below $200 ($198 at Costco). Still not the price point everybody wants, but for a first-rate, highly regarded Panasonic, a pretty good price.

yeah..liike I said joe, this is awesome news. I was just giving a heads up over the state of the format from ten or so walmarts that I have been too recently from dayton to cincinnati. in these cases the isles are getting smaller. the new release section is pretty healthy at 30 a pop behind sealed glass, and there are a few 2 for 20 bundles with the movies falcon mentioned. their is also a very small selection of 10 legacy titles. oh..and a stack of 98 bd players at the wallmart I just returned from. we currently have access to 2 ps'3 here so I didn't feel the need to pick one up even though the price was boner inducing...

This price point is actually very impressive. This almost tempts me to get one for my father-in-law. I just bought him a plasma tv as a surprise gift and a blu-ray player would be a nice compliment to the tv. Hopefully this is a trend for the pricing on the majority of players. I still don't understand why blu-ray players costs so much more than hddvd players did since they use the same technology.
