The manual for my DLP TV says that it's native resolution is 720p. When I am watching something through my hi-def cable or upconvert DVD player, the TV acknowledges that the source is 1080p and 1080i, respectiveley. Does this mean that the picture that I'm seeing is 1080 or is the TV downscaling to 720.

I'm considering purchasing a BLu-ray player, but am really pleased with my TV. In your opinion, is Blu-ray worth it if I'm not watching them in 1080p?

What size is your tv? My 32 inch 720p looks great w/ Blu ray, even better than my 65 inch 1080p. I would say regardless it is worth it especially if you have the sound system to take advantage of the audio.

It is a 50" and I have a Sony 600W 5.1 system. I'm still looking for clarification on my native resolution question

If your television is 720p, that's the actual resolution you are getting. The thing is, many cable companies (like Comcast) broadcast their HD channels in 1080, and, of course, Blu-ray discs are encoded in 1080, which are then downscaled by your TV to 720.

Thanks for the clarification! That was what I thought, I was just double-checking myself. Hey John, did you get my e-mail invite to Flickchart? If so, what do you think about it? It's pretty barebones right now, but the concept is interesting.

If your tv is 720p native like mine, it is probably just letting you know what signal the tv is receiving from whatever device you are using. Mine does this as well. But that doesn't mean your tv is actually displaying that as it will downconvert automatically. Yes, your tv will display a beautiful picture with Blu Ray(it is worth it). I notice a large difference with most movies on my 58" DLP. Plus with the Blu Ray player you will get the upconverted look for all your dvds which is much better than the progressive scan normal dvd players have.

Thanks for that. I currently have an upscaling DVD player and I'm very pleased with the picture of it. I borrowed a friend's PS3 and watched Transformers on Blu-rayand MI:2 (the first DVD that I ever purchased) and noticed an improvement in picture quality over the upscaling DVD player. I'm pretty much sold on Blu, it's only a matter of time now.

50" is just about the limit of whether or not you would be able to tell a huge difference between 720 and 1080. anything bigger than 50" is where the differences start to show. I was just reading an article about how people were avoiding 720 sets these days even in smaller sets believing that 1080 was needed and would make a big difference. this is simply not true. 720 is fine up to 50". now..go get yourself a player.

My B-day is coming soon and I've asked for a 1TB hard drive. My entire movie collection will go on it so I can have any of them on my iPod when I want. If that happens, the Blu-ray will probably happen at Christmas.
