GREAT article John. I sure need to re-think how I clean my ears

Seriously though, give it a read!

Very cool John that you started the article with the most important "component" of them all. The ears. I could not agree more with your comment on ipods for back in the day it was the walkman and then the discman that damaged my hearing. (Ringing) And then working in a press room didn't do my ears any favors either. Great article.

Greast article John. I too have ringing in my left ear (nothing I can't live with) which is at about 70%. The right is ok. My daughter is constantly telling me to turn down the tv. I had the left rear jacked up a bit on my old 5.1 system but the new 7.1 seems ok without any compensation. The daughter and son-in-law issue will be gone soon when their new house is finished. They both work in the medical sector with long and inconsistant hours which has seriously hampered my movie watching habits a bit (so they can sleep). An aside: They have eliminated a window in their greatroom to make room for a tv on the wall and are roughing in wireing for a 7.1 system. Of course, you know who they want to install the system...actually, I'll probably give them my old 5.1 Denon for the time being.

Nice John.
I have a question. I have 7.1 surround, when watching blu rays w/ uncompressed sound should I let the ps3 decode (run the receiver in straight mode) or use Dolby II Movie to simulate 7.1?

Hey John, you are the MAN! That was without a doubt one of the best informative articles I have read on the subject. So are you busy, say next weekend to help calibrate my speakers? LOL

richiro,
All the Dolby surround setting should be doing is addinig simulated rear signals to a 5.1 mix (or surround signals to a 2.0 mix). Just let the PS3 do its thing sending out the primary signals (front, center, and surrounds), and the Dolby surround setting will take care of the back speakers. If the disc already has 7.1 signals encoded on it, the receiver's Dolby surround settings should have no effect.

John
