so it finally happened, my 50 inch panasonic dlp has finally bit the dust and i need a new tv to fill the void left in my living. however, my wallet is thinner than i would like it so my budget is not ideal. ideally i want at least a 40'' tv, 120hz would be nice, and 1080p. but i would like to keep it between $1,000 and $1200 while still getting a quality machine. so i need ideas, got any?

you have got plenty o cash to get yourself a nice set. the girlfriend got a 50" panasonic vierra plasma last christmas (the BEST time to shop for these things) for 1,200 and she loves it. with so many options out there these days in your price range it is very hard to recommend one specific set. go look at wallmart and best buy. btw..what happpened to the DLP?

well, to start it's 5 years old and time was catching up. but i can't be too certain about the exact cause, ive done research on my tv and it has a track record of burning out after 3 years. but the biggest thing is the bulb. it needs its third one in two years. that's a scant $700+ dollars total.

yeah..it sounds like your set has seen its day. I was curious because I have a samsung dlp and it has been really good to me for two years. no bulb issues. (knock on wood)..and for size, price, and performance...dlp is really hard to beat even though the form factor isn't "chic" anymore. anyway..you didn't mention where you are planning to use the new set (spec. lighting conditions) and seating distance. (of which dvdtowns john puccio is an expert in that field). so a little more knowledge in these two areas might help us to help you to decide what is best for you.

Best Buy has the LGLH40, this is a 42" 120Hz TV for $999.99 on sale. This is the TV that I purchased February 2009 and I love it.

Circuit City has their new on line store, and they have the Toshiba 40" 120Hz TV on sale for $699.99 with free shipping. This is a great deal on this TV.
Wal Mart has two Vizio 42" 120Hz TV's. One is $848.00 and the other is $998.00.
