OK, so when I slightly in-closed my ONKYO 605 that I thought there might be trouble but never did I consider that the thing would shut off even with considerable air flow, even matching air flow from the previous set up. I also noticed that even when switched off for several hours the thing STILL generates heat.

This might be my last ONKYO receiver because this is not accepatable. I was playing KZ2 and decided to turn up the volume for the 7.1, and BAM....it shut off. I was warned about heat issues with the ONKYOs now this is starting to get on my nerves. Any suggestions?

pulll it out and set it on the floor..not on carpet ofcoarse until you can find a more suitable location for it. I had this very same problem with my older pioneer elite. that thing ran super hot when it was on and ran very warm when it was off. so..I pulled the thing out of the rack and set it on top of a glass base on the floor of which helped until I sold it. I dunno..maybe your speakers impedance doesn't jive with this reciever? maybe they are pulling too much current? maybe the internal fan..if it has one..is broke? pull it out set it on the floor and see if that helps. you may even want to try using a small fan. good luck.

Tony,

All new receivers run hot because they always remain in a "ready" state, meaning they're always on (unless you actually unplug them from the wall each time you turn them off).

I have an Onkyo 705, which also runs warm, but even with 7.1 speakers connected to it and all running very loudly, I've never had it get hot enough to turn itself off. However, if it did turn itself off, that's good because it's what it's programmed to do if it's overheating. Better that than burn out the innards.

It is possible the fan in your unit has stopped working (although I've never even heard the fan in my unit ever turn on). Or as suggested above, you might want to change the Ohm setting in receiver's menu. Or, more than possible, you're not giving the unit enough ventilation. You should give it a good three-to-five inches above and a foot or more on the sides and back to let the warm air escape it.

Well fellas here is what I did. I took two ATX computer case fans rigged them up to a 9volt adaptor and placed the fans on top of the receiver. Since the 605 does not come with any internal cooling fans I went with this hook up and it works. Thanks for your help Blade and John.

P.S. And the fans run very quite.

Still and all, Tony, if you have room enough on top of the unit to place cooling fans, it should be getting enough air circulation without the fans. Which leads me to believe that something isn't right with the receiver. It shouldn't be constantly overheating as it was.

John, I hope not but the fans have eliminated the shut off issue.....SO FAR.

My Onkyo 805 have never skipped a beat and it sits in a cabinet like this from Ikea:

However, it has relatively good space above it and I have removed the back panel of the cabinet.

Hope your unit will keep running.

As said, from what I've seen all receiver runs hot these days. Mine sure does so I give it plenty of breathing room. I have an Onkyo as well.

I was just looking at the way the receiver is set up inside the cabinet and I have at least 18 inches of clearance the only thing as Henning said is that I still have the back on, but when the receiver is in use the cabinet doors are wide open allowing heat out. I don't want to take out the back panel because it won't look right. I can live with 2 case fans on top of the unit.
