dang, it's still about 200 euros (or $300 USD) for a funai clone, but maybe you can find an on-sale model at tesco or something.

I bought into hd-dvd fiirst because at the time it was the most complete product and the cheapest. Infact..it is my opinion that blu-ray has just recently caught upto what hd-dvd pretty much had from the getgo. All the different profiles for bd was and still is an embarrassment and only serves to prove that if you have the cash to buy off studios and a game console ( with built in br) that follows the very successful ps2 that you can "win" format wars. Still..there are around 300 plus movies available for the dead format at insanely low prices and if you pick up an extra player or two (also at insane low prices)...well, why the hell not just do that to get your hd fix until the price of bd suits you.

im with bladerunner... i got hddvd first - i was at the time rather firm on the format til it died out - cause of the titles at the time, and the capabilities at the time. i still look out for cheap titles on amazon (i got dreamgirls for eight bucks!). but i also did get blu-ray cause it did get to hd's potential. but i will still get hddvd movies for various reasons. i even plan to get the xbox 360 attachment someday! it may be dead, but you can still get it for what its still worth

What about buying one on Ebay and then shipping it to Europe? It should work with an adapter for the power cord right?

falcon,

the problem with that solution is that some movies are region-locked. also, some discs in europe have SD extras in PAL rather than NTSC, so those extras would not be playable on a Region A player.

Ah, good point. It's too bad they have to pay so much for bluray players over there.

Remember the good ole days...with HD-DVD being region free

I have a few European HD-DVDs with Pal xtras. The audio plays but not the video. The days of the "War" were actually fun now that I look back at them. Some of the Blu Ray characters that showed up on this forum were kinda like...uh...Democrats. (I know, I'm gonna get it for that!)
