That's a genius move if they do that for big movies. I don't think people will really care about dance flick.

It's not really a genius nor new move welshman217, it has been a common practice to delay retail editions by releasing rental editions weeks in advance, and really hasn't done much to boost Blu-ray, at least globally. For instance i could go right now to my local Blockbuster and could rent X-Men Origins: Wolverine, while the retail DVD and Blu-ray are scheduled for mid September.

First of all, it's ludicrous to believe that non-Blu-ray owners will suddenly purchase a new LCD/Plasma screen, Home Theater sound system and Blu-ray player, so they can watch Transformers 2 or Star Trek (which IMO aren't worth spending money on them) because they can only buy them on Blu-ray (and probally pay more than what they would for them on DVD) when they can rent it on DVD on the same day, while waiting for the retail DVD to hit stores, without investing hundreds of dollars in new equipment.

Finally, it's well known that the 4th quarter of each year is pivotal for home video sales, and that DVD claims most of those sales globally, therefore if any movie studio whishes to profit largely before the year ends, it's crucial that any possible top seller movie to be availible on DVD the soonest possible.

Actually I think it may persuade more people to buy a BluRay player whether they have a HDTV or not. Lots of people know that Blu is here to stay so they will just invest in the player till there existing TV dies. Getting movies earlier would motivate me if I didn't have a HDTV or BluRay player yet. A small motivater yes but it would up the numbers a bit. Selling BluRay packs with included dvd works too because for the customer its win win. My Bolt BluRay pack is the first I've seen in my collection to do that.

I wonder if anyone in the industry has done a study of the current percentage of HD television owners who do not own BD players. These are the folks the Paramount promotion is trying to reach. Obviously, the powers that be at Paramount are not going to persuade too many people with SD sets to go out and buy new TVs and BD players. But they will probably induce a few people who already have HD televisions finally to buy into Blu-ray.

I was kinda thinking that everybody in the world should just bite the bullit and buy an hd set so that we don't have staggered programming on the networks. I mean hd IS the future and those who still don't own hd sets will eventually have to get into the game sometime anyway. so I think that those still living in the sd world should look at this the same way as paying taxes but in this case you willl actually get something in return that will hopefullly make you very happy. ( yaknow..instead of having to pay to have the street fixed or pay for bombs to blow up other streets) and with the prices of sets so low...

IMO staggered releases will not benefit much Blu-ray adoption, specially globally. Yes, Blu-ray is here to stay but most likely as a niche format yes Blu-ray has gained presence within USA, yet it's still minimal compared to what DVD keeps selling, while gobally Blu-ray consumption is so scarse, that retail stores don't want to sell them because people aren't buying them, and if Blu-ray isn't being consumed globally then it will live as a niche format. Blu-ray is looking more everyday like a Laser-Disc's dejavu.

I agree with wolvinator, instead of staggering releases, they should release DVD/BluRay combos because for the customer its win win situation, either they're into Blu-ray or not, and will increase chances for a global Blu-ray adoption. But as for staggering releases to favor Blu-ray, specially with the most anticipated releases like Transformers 2 and Star Trek, I doubt this will happen, specially globally, and if it will work in benefit for the movie studios, as everyday they delay releasing the DVD version, will narrow their chances of profiting largely from selling them before the year ends.

prices aside..im not really sure how you could not be into blu ray? well prices and the fact that it makes most of your current dvd collection obsolete because it generally looks lame when compared to bd even upconverted. I personally now hate the fact that I bought and own so many dvds because I always find myself picking them apart on my 56" screen. they are much more tolerable on my gfs 50" plasma though. so screen size is important here. anyway regarding the thread...yeah it doesn't bother me at all if they want to sell me star trek on bd four months earlier. lol. but im with the other posters who doubt that it will make a huge difference in the grande scheme of things. that is unless everybody is forced to buy an hd set by the government as I kinda mentioned above...and then ofcoarse their is still the price issue for the many average consumers who already think they have hd because their set is hd and that sddvd is hd because it looks somewhat better on their hd set. education on the matter would help a lot more than staggering releases.
